Kingston RAM Overclock?

Alright, so I'm messing around with overclocking the CPU still but I've run into yet another problem. I have this:

My issue is that it's clocked at 800 MHz while it should be at 1066. I changed it to 1066 via BIOS but I got a BSOD after POST. What is the issue?

your ram voltage may be set too low your board , probably defaults to 1.8v , that ram is 2.2v , try upping the voltage to your ram as a starting point , also make sure its set to 2T in the timings section of your bios , it may be set at 1T as default.

the timings for that ram are 5/5/5/15 , try dropping them to 5/7/7/24

i assume you unlinked the ram from the cpu before setting it to 1066?

Running your memory at 1066 has more to do with the FSB and divider than it does with the actual memory. You will need to overclock your FSB and use the proper divider in order to run your memory at 1066Mhz. I like to look these numbers up and then unlink the memory from the FSB. You can usually get these numbers by going to a forum dedicated to your motherboard.

For instance on my board running my Q9650 at 4.05Ghz 1800QDR 450FSB using the 4:3 divider I run my memory at 1200MHz which isn't even overclocked for my PC2 9600 memory.

sweet It may have been a voltage issue all along so you might wanna try tightening up your timings again see how performs (back to 5/5/5/15) , leave it at 2T though

Well this is quite odd. For some reason, Windows shows yet another BSOD on start-up today. I have no clue what could have triggered it since I've changed nothing in the BIOS lately. I have yet to mess with the FSB and divider, maybe that's the issue?

Try setting your ram to the default speeds and timings detected by your BIOS but keep/change the voltage to 2.2v because you ram chip(s) is rated up till that voltage and Kingston will fully warranty your ram up until those voltages regardless the speeds your running your ram at. I think the BIOS detects the ram as DDR2-800 5-5-5-15 plus you need to change the ram voltage to 2.2v.

Download and burn Memetest86+: Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

IMPORTANT!: Make sure nothing else is overclocked in your BIOS, e.g: CPU, FSB or PCIe and that all the voltages are at default besides the ram running at 2.2v before running Memetest86+.

Run Memtest86+ with the default speeds and timings detected by your BIOS with 2.2v as mentioned above for at least 2 passes, 3 passes is recommended in your case.

If all goes well and you get 3 passes without errors at default speeds and timings with 2.2v then your ram is not faulty and we can proceed to either overclocking you ram to DDR2-1066 speeds or setting the multiplier to 5.33x if your BIOS has that option for DDR2-1066 speeds. However, if you gets errors within those 3 passes then your ram is faulty and you need to exchange/return or RMA your memory depending what option you still have left.

Let us know what the results of Memtest86+ within 3 passes. And we can hep proceed to getting your memory at DDR2-1066 speeds or at least close to those speeds.

Everything went smooth as butter! I can easily reach 2.2 with default settings, but changing from 800 to 1066 results in a BSOD. What is the next step?

You mean to say, your ran 3 passes Memetest86+ with your ram speeds and timings at default as detected by your BIOS with 2.2v?

If all the above is true, proceed.

Taken for the manual for your motherboard (M4N72-E). Go into your BIOS and into the 'AI Tweaker' tab, everthing should be at default speeds and voltages besides the ram at 2.2v. Change the DRAM Frequency to [1067] or 5.33x which ever is found in the BIOS. Make sure nothing else is overclocked in your BIOS besides the ram frequency now at 1066 or 5.33x and ram voltage at 2.2v. Save and exit and try to load into Windows.

Let us know if you get BSOD.

After changing the frequency to 1066, I did indeed get a BSOD. :sarc:

No problem, go back into the BIOS and change back the ram frequency to default 800. Save and exit and go right back into the BIOS without starting Windows and go into the 'Memory Configuration' and let us know the default timings as detected in your BIOS for the ram at DDR2-800.

P.S.: You sure you ran Memetest86+ with default timings and ram voltage at 2.2v for 3 passes, that was a really fast reply from my initial post? 3 Passes usually takes about 2 hours if you have 4GB and 1 hour if your have 2GB.

Would you belive I downloaded the wrong version? I was wondering why it just closed. I've downloaded the correct version and am about to run it.

Also, when I changed the RAM back to 800, the computer shut off the second I pressed save and exit. Weird, eh? Anyways, according to the information, my timings are: 5-5-5-3(5) -18-24-6-3. I'm reading this off of the DCT0 1st information text. I'll let memtest continue and report back findings.

If it shut down - and stayed off, that is weird.

After following Nemix77's good advice - to achieve 1066 you may even have up the DRAM voltage to 2.3V

Since it's done a 'quick 3 pass' @ 800mhz - with the timings and voltage entered manually, raise it to 1066mhz and repeat the memtest run.


(I say 'quick 3 pass' since generally 8+ passes are recommended)

It shut off and stayed off. Nothing appears out of the ordinary, and I'm able to get into Windows fine. It did give me a scare though.

According to the specs, 2.2V is required to achieve 1066. 2.3V wouldn't damage the RAM in any way?

EDIT: If I put the RAM to 1066, I get a BSOD.

No 2.3v will not damage the ram in any way. General rule of thumb is you can go .1v above your rated ram voltage and the manufacture will still fully warrant your ram.

So did you Memetest86+ for 3 passes?

I was on the forum this whole time and saw that you were still logged in, if you Memetest86+ correctly for 3 passes you should not be in Windows let alone signed in to your SevenForums account.

If you did not Memetest86+ for 3 passes at BIOS default speeds and timings with 2.2v, we cannot help you proceed any further.
