I have Windows 7 64bit, a Belkin router, and a Wifi usb card.

I have a Windows Xp computer networked and shared on the router.

I get my internet from the Wifi usb card.

I would like to use the internet off the wifi card, but also still connect to my network and get files from the XP computer.

(I would like to have the connections separate. One for Internet over Wifi. Lan for sharing files over home network.)

I have the two connections working just fine. and i can get internet...
But...

The LAN is a "public network" and I cant change it to a home network.
and i cant see the Xp computer or its files.

I would be grateful for any help.

Ok, your W7 machine is using the USB wifi, and your XP is using the home wifi (ie through your router). I cannot see why your W7 can't use both the USB wifi AND router wifi. Matter of fact it should work from connections point of view. I tried it on my eeepc, with a USB modem attached.

If you are just sharing files from your W7 and Xp, you don't need to be on the internet. That said if both machine can see each other, everything you wanted should be fine. Just create shared folder to be shared between the machines, and surf the net from either. However why do u want to use the USB wifi for internet when you can use your router's?

Ok, so you are saying you cannot get your W7 which is using the USB wifi, to connect to the internet?

Okay... I know..

If you are pulling internet from a usb device... either you are picking it up free (i persume)

So you are going to have to make your MAIN computer the gateway.. the one pulling in the internt.

If i am not mistaking and the wa you want it...
You want to give all the computers internet and also put your computer and the rest on the network.

This is what you do...your only going to use the LAN ports on your router. You can turn off NAT and Wireless.. becuase the NAT will come from your REMOTE computer.

REMOTE COMPUTER:

WIRELESS ADAPTER... INTERNET COMING IN
START THE ICS ON IT, IN SETTINGS MAKE SURE THAT IT IS POINTING TO AN ENABLED NIC CARD

ON THE OTHER NIC ON THE REMOTE COMPUTER YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT THE IPS SAY:
192.168.0.1

THAT IS IT FOR THE REMOTE

PLUG THE CAT 5 CABLE INTO THE LAN 1 OF THE ROUTER.

------------------------------------------------------------

SECOND COMPUTER (WORKSTATION)
PLUG CAT5 CABLE IN LAN 2

CHANGE THE IPS.. IN THE IPv4

IP: 192.168.0.2
SUBNET: 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY: 192.168.0.1

MAKE SURE YOU PULL THE DNS NUMBERS FROM YOUR INTERNET AND FORCE THEM IN OR THE WEBPAGES WON'T PULL UP... INTRANET WILL WORK THOUGH :)

Please go under your network and sharing center for Windows 7.

Once you bring that up. You will see it being connected to the internet.

If you see where it saids "View Active Networks" If you say its public then it should have a park bench there.

*I much warn you, change this to Home/Work, please install a good firewall and configure it properly*

Click "Public Network" and it should give you the option to switch over now.

The internet (wifi) is public. and can be changed.

The LAN (wired) cannot be changed from public.

it needs to be private.

I am truely sorry but if you want your computes to see each other...
you hae to change it to Home/Work

that is why i suggested a good firewall.

that is what private means... so that others can't see your network... even yourself *lol*

I tried:
Vista Network Identification for Loopback Adpater
and it seems to work... but it is crude and u cant see the computers on ur network.

I was looking through that webpage you listed. The guy was so fustrated trying to get just "that" to work and people where telling him to modify the registry...not sure if your comfortable with it.

The suggestion is the only thing i can think of at this moment. I hope some other people can come in and shine some light on it.

As time goes by, i will look into it and see what i find out for you.

Since the router is public, you will need to add a switch and connect the pc's via "Pass thru or bi-directional cabling" That way you are still connected to the router but still be able th access both computers.

Yeah, if the LAN network is labeled "Public" under Windows 7, then Windows will prevent file sharing over it by default.

You need to change it to Home/Work.
