Solved Laptop connects to wireless router but with no internet access

The problem is solved now, and I'm not really sure why! I tried resetting it one last time, and then my computer installed some random updates and the internet seems to function fine now. I'm a bit confused as to why it did this, considering I checked to see if I was missing any updates, but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth!

It was most likely the reset IP file which sometimes takes two restarts in order to sort everything out, not to mention disabling the virtual miniport adaptor. Of course the second you went back online Windows tried to download updates as it usually does when the connection is working.

I doubt the problem just magically fixed itself...

I would still follow the instructions on changing the security and encryption for the wireless connection and I would definitely disable Bonjour in Windows services.

Just download and unzip the Reset IP file that I loaded earlier, run the file and your machine will reboot automatically. It may take a second reboot to fix problems.

It may help to go into your routers wireless settings and set to use the correct security and encryption as I suggested earlier.

So did you disable BOTH of the Msoft virtual wifi miniport adaptors, you have two of them showing there in the ipconfig. You need to go into Device Manger for that.

Have you run any virus scan's lately?

Have you tried running the sfc/scannow command to check for any file corruption issues?

Hello, all! Like NickF, I, too, am having the same problem regarding connecting to the internet. I've tried all of the troubleshooting as listed above, but I don't have a virtual wifi adapter on my laptop which I can disable.

In your case you should first uninstall all the 6 to 4 tunnel adaptors as it seems you have too many of them which can cause connection problems.

You can do it manually by going into Device Manager, top of page to "View" tab then choose "show hidden devices" look to Network Adaptors and uninstall all the tunnel adaptors you see there and reboot your system, a new one will be created automatically.

I also have a file that will do this for you automatically.

I have indeed disabled both of them and am running a virus scan and the sfc /scannow.

Fingers crossed they'll shed more light on this. Any other ideas, while I'm waiting?

Thank you, chev65! I have done as you recommended and removed the tunnel adapters using your attachment. I also ran the IPReset .exe and let my computer restart. I'm still unable to connect to the internet, I'm afraid.

Ok the plot thickens. I restarted my laptop and turned off and restarted my router. After several minutes I tried to connect to the network and was greeted with this message:


Windows has detected an IP address conflict

Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving the issue. More details are available in the Windows System event log.

Thoughts?

UPDATE: Restarted my laptop again and its said no such thing so I don't know what to think.

If you did an actual reset on the router you will need to go into the routers wireless set up page and reconfigure the wireless settings with the security and encryption I mentioned earlier. Might have to redo the SSID and password also.

If you haven't performed a full reset of the router by pushing and holding down the reset button for 30 seconds you should do that now.

Be sure to go into the Windows Wireless Manager and make sure the settings being used in the router are the same ones you used for the wireless profile.

As for the IP conflict, do any of the machines in your network use a static IP? If so you need to use an IP that is outside the DHCP range that the router is using, this will avoid the IP conflict problem.

It might be worth pointing out that just about any A/V software can and will cause connection problems and do so on a regular basis.

With your advice in mind, I continued to research my problem online and found out that a recent update (released Saturday I believe) for McAfee has been causing users a lot of problems, most of which could no longer access the internet.

At first I wasn't convinced however I started up my laptop, switched to safe mode and low and behold my connection was fine. At this point I was convinced the recent McAfee update was the problem and blocking my internet access.

I uninstalled the program and bingo, I'm back online!

Most Dell laptops come pre-installed with McAfee so if anyone else is experiencing the same problem, check it out, it could be a simple solution for you.

I had exact same problem and sure enough it was mcafee. Here is my question tho for nick.

By any chance, was your mcafee subscription about to expire?

I just find it odd that after never having this issue ever on this dell laptop that I bought last year; all of the sudden it blocks my internet access and just so happens my subscription to mcafee expired in 3 days.
