Laptop HDD Replacement Choice

Hey Guys, just trying to get some info.

I need to change a HDD in a Vaio VGN-N130G

The system came originally with a 80GB with a 1.6GHz processor

I ve narrowed down the HDD to the following 2: ( to be honest mostly due to budged restraints!!)

Western Digital Scorpio Blue (WD1600BEVT) 160GB SATA 5400 RPM 8MB or

Seagate ST980813ASG Momentus 7200.2 Mobile Hard Drive - 80GB, 2.5", 7200RPM, 8MB, SATA-300

Now space considerations wise...I believe an 80GB would serve the purpose of the use of the computer more than adequately.....if so would u say the performance benefits of the seagate being a 7200rpm drive would be more advantageous...

or would the 7200 be more of a drain or create issues with cooling, resources etc..

if space isn't an issue i'd go with the 7200RPM drive. you'll get a slightly noticeable performance boost. and in the future if you need more space the cost of external drives is dropping pretty quicly.

Thanks for your time in replying...

Sorry, I should have been clearer...the laptop came with a 80GB HDD 5400rpm...which now i guess more or less lived its life...(trouble starting up and funny clicking noise)...so i m planning on replacing it.

Hence the two options I have as per the original post....

Laptop HDD replacement is usually very simple - you don't need any extra cables etc.

I'd go for the newer 320GB or 500GB -- they are fast and you will be surprised at how convenient having large amounts of internal storage is - especially if you are on the move and don't want to carry around external usb drives.

The extra cost of a 320 / 500Gb is really small in any case.

Make sure the 2 1/2 in drive has a connector split into a 15 and a 7 pin connecor --this will plug straight in to the connector in the laptop. Note ensure also the disk is SATA and is a laptop not a disk designed for a desktop -- connectors are different.

Fujitsu / Hitachi do good 320 / 500 GB GB models.

Storage space versus speed ?

Depending on your needs, if the storage space will just sit there empty, then go for speed.
The Seagate ST980813ASG Momentus is a good choice.

Having said that, shop around you'll likely find a good 160GB 7200RPM 16mb cache SATA HD for close to the same price.
Seagate and WD are both good.

My HP Pavilion came with an 80 GB SATA drive, and I soon ran out of space. I now have a 160 GB drive, with a 50 GB partition for Win 7, a 30 GB partition for WinXP, a 20 GB partition for Mac OSX Snow leopard, and 50 GB partition for storage (the other 10 is unallocated HD formated space). No problems what-so-ever and no slowdown in boot times or transferring files from one partition to another.

You may want to check your Owners Manual to make sure it will support larger drives...a small portion of Laptops will not but it's best to be sure.

Good Luck with the new drive...

Do you plan on "cloning" the old drive to the new one ? ?

Here's some good reading. Tomshardware also has charts for earlier drives and several review articles. There are many new 7200 2.5" drives that consume less power than 5400rpm drives of just a couple years ago. And some of them compete performance-wise with desktop drives of just a year or two ago.

Hi and thanks again for the responses and many tips and info. Its greatly appreciated.

I wasn't planning on cloning the old one, I ll hopefully have my Win7 disk by then so might as well go for a clean slate. But none the less its something to think about.

Apologies for the placement in the wrong section....I, initially, was gonna place it in "hardware" section, then realized it wasn't a "strictly speaking" Win 7 question so didn't wanna seem rude.

There's a lot of good hard drives out there.
Samsung, Hitachi and Fujitsu are very power-miserly (and good).
The WD blues are highly rated too. I just put a WD2500BEVT ($55) in a Samsung laptop for someone. Dead silent, very fast.
