Laptop Keyboard Doesn't Work Properly After Boot

Hi,

I have an Asus R510D laptop, which originally came w/ Windows 8 installed. I downgraded to Windows 7, and the very first time I booted, everything was fine. Ever since then, after boot, at the login screen, the keyboard does not allow me to type my password. However, I am able to use the function keys, which is the workaround I've found for this issue.

After booting and reaching the login screen, I must put the keyboard to sleep, then awaken it, for the keyboard to function properly. I've tried updating the driver, but it doesn't solve the issue. I was wondering if anyone had come across an issue like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Lance,

Thank you for your suggestion! After looking at the Asus web site, I'm supposing that this laptop actually is an R510DP, although on the laptop itself, it says R510D. Regardless, I installed the Windows 8 driver for the keyboard. However, when I rebooted, the same issue cropped up. Any thoughts on what might be the cause?

Do you have mouse at log on screen? If you do you can launch the on screen keyboard and "type" with it.
Did you try an external USB keyboard?
Try to disable log on password to see if it boots normally.

Hi Megahertz,

I do have a mouse at the login screen, and it does work properly. As well, I am able to bring up the on-screen keyboard, if necessary. I don't have an external USB keyboard to test w/, but I did try disabling the password on my account, and it booted into Windows, but the keyboard was unusable, until I put the laptop into sleep, then took it out.

Near the clock, do you have keyboard icon?
Open Control Panel - Region and Languages - Check all tabs
At Keyboards and Languages - Change keyboards - You should only have one keyboard. If you don't, remove those that do not correspond to your needs.

Are you referring to keyboard icon in the taskbar after boot? No, I don't have an icon for the keyboard there.

I checked the Keyboards and Languages tab, and there was only one keyboard set.

What is strange is that it works after a wake up from sleep
Open device manager to see if there is any drivers that need attention.
Right click on the keyboard device and uninstall, then Action - scan for hardware changes. It will look for a driver and install it.

Indeed, that is very strange. :)

If I uninstall the driver, Windows will install the generic driver that had been installed, until it was recommended that I upgrade it, which I did, earlier in this thread.

It can be many things.
run msconfig and at services, mark Hide all MS services and then disable all others. Reboot. If it doesn't change the keyboard issue, undo msconfig changes.
Run your antivirus. Install and run this anti spyware: SUPERAntiSpyware - Downloading File
Try to disable antivirus and reboot.
