Laptop Loses Charge Instantly After A Couple of Minutes

Hey guys

So i am having a very unusual problem. I have an Asus G50vt-x5 laptop (with windows 7 now, originally had vista), and my old battery was losing charge so quickly. So, i got a new one. I did everything you were supposed to, charged it up, discharged it, charged it again, etc.

For some reason, i can just be playing or doing things on my laptop, and it'll randomly just lose ALL power. For example, i was playing a video game the other day and was at roughly 65% battery, and suddenly the computer just instantly died. And i don't know if any of you have seen an asus, but there is a little light on the panel with the power button for like a "quick start", and that light is ALWAYS on. but when the laptop died it wasn't. Which i take it means absolutely no power was going to the laptop.

Anyone got any ideas as to what the problem is? By the way i know it isnt just a faulty battery, this is my 3rd battery replacement. It is a problem with my laptop.

FWIW: there are settings in the control panel power settings on what the computer will do when the battery is low but something tells me that you might have bought an old battery. Where did you buy the batteries?
If on the "open" market they could very possibly be old stock and won't take much of a charge.

Changed that setting already

And i dont think it is an old battery. This is the 3rd battery replacement and i have had the same problem with all of them. i highly doubt i bought 3 old batteries.

Should contact Asus...either you have a hardware problem, or are expecting too much from the battery when you are playing games.

If it is a New Battery and you fully charged it ect.... Try cleaning the contacts both battery and laptop .... nothing abrasive or acidic on the battery in case you need to send it back....
I find Baby wipes to be effective enough to clean the contact or screen wipes
If the battery isn't making full contact as it should then the voltage reading will be false causing the Laptop to shut down as a precaution to save vital data
as logicearth says you could be expecting more from the battery than intended.... Gaming and videos will drain power like no tomorrow

its probably not that I am expecting too much. The laptop is completely losing a charge, and from the laptop going from 65% to insta-dead makes no sense.

I'll try cleaning the contacts and report back. Maybe that is the problem.... we'll see

The SmartLogon (what I'm sure you mean by "Quick Start") on my Asus G74Sx doesn't always stay lit. I had numerous problems straight out of the box concerning numberpad/keyboard and the lighting that were all fixed by a Bios update.I highly suggest you go to the Asus support site. Here's where I found my Bios update and much more pertinent information for MY Asus :Republic of Gamers Forum

I will be the first to admit and to warn you that getting help from Asus is like pulling teeth,but when you do find what you need and where to get it, that it works as they say. Good Luck

before i go through a bios update which did u update to, 210 or 213? neither?

Think it was 202, but I DO have a different model than yours. See if your model supports WinFlash, if it does I very strongly suggest you use that to do the update. Simple and extremely easy to use, it practically does it by itself. I was impressed.
The reason I suggest the Bios update is because of your statement that the light for SmartLogon stays lit all the time.My doesn't and I'm thinking maybe that or something associated with that may have something to do with the battery and/or power consumption.
As I mentioned earlier,I had multiple lighting and keyboard/fingerpad/numberpad problems straight out of the box. And from the comments I saw on their support forums mine was not an isolated case and in fact was an ongoing problem with several different models. Once fixed though my battery lasts longer, my keyboard etc. works like a dream. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

My last Asus laptop had a battery health monitor within the bios, running it would tell me things about the battery, mainly if it was fudged or not.

3 batteries to me says there's a trend going on, I'd say its either a charger issue, or your laptop at fault.

I'd say its more likely to be your laptop.

Lithium batteries hold 95% of their voltage until they are flat, so my guess would be that slight drop in voltage isn't powerful enough to keep current running into and out of the capacitors.

A guess at best for me would say dodgy capacitors on the motherboard, it they aren't maintaining a charge then it would explain the instant loss of power.

Powering from the mains is a higher voltage than supplied by the battery, as it takes a higher voltage than the battery output to charge it. Otherwise the battery would not charge.
(Typically say an 8.4v cell would be charge at 9.6 volt ect..)

Actually, will updating my bios really do anything? The laptop seems to have no charge after it instantly dies. What is even more strange is now it is only happening when i play games. But my laptop is a gaming laptop, so it should be able to handle them. is there maybe something wrong with my mother board that if i push it too far it just loses charge? idk. anyone got any suggestions/advice?

A trip back to the manufacturer would be the best bet, wouldn't trust some fat sweaty guy in the local computer shop checking out capacitores and what not on a pcb if it were me

Hi there
To go back to a standard scientific premise which can be proved to work

"When you have a number of possible outcomes the simplest one is likely to be the correct solution".

I'd suggest you got a duff replacement battery -- either it wasn't EXACTLY the correct model (possibly a copy version of the original manufacturers model) or it was defective.

Sometimes faulty products DO get shipped and possibly for low turnover on these types of items it might have passed its "Shelf Life".

If you've had 3 -- then I agree it's almost unlikely they would all be defective --unless you bought them from the same place which had a bad batch -- then I'd simply "Toss" the laptop.

These days a brand new laptop would probably cost less than 4 or 5 replacement batteries -- may be only as much as 3 !!!!!!.

Did you check your charger? Is your laptop working good on charger and with battery and without battery?

Sometimes chargers go bad and they don't recharge properly. Try to swap the charger.

If someone you know had similar laptop, you can try your batteries on their laptops. Or their charger on your laptop.

they can probably help you better then we could...
esp., if it is a hardware problem... :huh:
