HP dv7 shuts off instantly after power up

I have had my dv7-2185dx for many many years and my battery doesnt hold a charge because I never took it out when plugged in (I never unplugged it, i used it like a desktop). My problem though is that when I power on my laptop, it instantly shuts off, before anything can even appear on the screen.

My charger is working because there is a light on the laptop that turns on when the power cable is in. and when its off and plugged in, the lighting bolt/charging light blinks.
My laptop is cool and not hot, because I havent been able to turn it on in a week.
I did try unplug and drain the battery by holding for 15secs but still shuts off instantly

normally i can still run my laptop plugged in with no battery, but now I cant turn it on.

One thing i noticed different, is when I plug in my power cable, the light turns on, then turns off, then turns back on and stays on. when my laptop shuts off, the charge light shuts off, then comes back on.

I also bought a new charger, but for some reason, when I plug it in, the light turn on, then turns off and stays OFF. so strange

any idea what it could be?

Hello Takaaaa mate sorry but it looks like a new machine might be your only recourse because the power / charging system seems to be at twos and fours with each other. I have a gut feeling that it is being caused by a cap or caps somewhere in the machine becoming defunct and not able to hold a charge.

Is there any smell associated with having the power plugged in and then trying to turn the machine on?

Your internal power supply can be defective because you have had a dead battery plug ed in.
Remove the battery and try to boot. If it doesn't, take the laptop to a repair shop.

It might also be that your fan has stopped turning because the bearings have seized or it is clogged with dust. A friend had an HP Pavillion laptop with the same issue, though not the power/charging light issue you describe, but it would shut off immediately on power up. A new fan fixed him up for a couple of more years until the graphics chip gave out.

But if it really is your internal power supply, a repair shop is the your only recourse. Probably a new motherboard is needed. In that case, I would consider buying a new laptop.

Yep the power circuitry in laptops is never that "substantial" and the machine has been in use for some time now eh and could be down to bad caps or even dry joints?
Plus the fan you should be able to hear it spinning and just wet your finger and hold it over the inlet and/or outlet and you should feel the draft from it because normally quite strong.
