Hello there,

I have an one year-old ASUS K53S Laptop, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bits, 6GB Ram and 500HDD.

At the beginning, my battery lasted >3 hours in Balanced power mode (which is the one I alway use) and now due to regular use it last about 2 hours.

Everything normal until here. About 2 months ago, i started playing this game in full screen with the battery on and it last about 30-40 minutes until it reached the low battery warning (11% left). I would then plug the power on and resume the game, charging the battery as well.

After a few weeks, the warning stopped appearing in the desktop and the computer automatically hibernated (5% left) with the game still on. So i plugged the ac power on and resumed the game right away.

This kept happening from that moment on: every time i played the game it would reach 5% battery left and hibernate for itself, whereas it should appear the low battery warning at 11% left where I would plug in the ac power and charge the battery without going into hibernation.

On top of that, my sister kept stealing my ac charger for charging her Toshiba Satellite as she often forgets her own charger at her workplace!

Now, at the present day, when the battery reaches about 15-20% left, the laptop power off unexpectedly, as if I had pull the battery off of the laptop.

It must be from all those time it would reach 5% left, with the game still on, that "tired" the battery and now it won't even last further than 20% left...

It might be a problem with the battery or the ac charger that my sister used in another computer.

Both the battery and its respectively ac charger are the ones that came with the laptop.

Can someone please tell me what is causing my 1 year-old laptop to power off for no reason at all when battery has just 20% remaining?? Do I have to buy a new one or what?

Regards,

Hi there .. Do you have Power4Gear Installed ... If so i would look into the Settings for that could be a power plan so save Battery life ... It should also be able to tell you your Battery's Health status ... I have no idea how good this Program is could be total crap ...

how well do you maintain the battery??

the biggest killer of lithium ion batteries is to leave them plugged in for long periods of time I.e over night when the battery is fully charged.

this results in the battery completing charge cycles through natural battery retardation and then starting to charge again to top it back up to 100%.

but this all could be down to a dodgy battery to start with and now its just becoming apparent.

the only true test is to buy a new battery see if it cures the problem, if it does, youve found the issue.

failing that take the battery out and play games with it plugged into the mains.

Thanks for your reply maxie.

I due have Power4Gear installed which came with the original ASUS settings. I didn't change, however, any settings regarding Power4Gear, I keep it always in "Entertainment" mode, whether on battery or not.

Also, i didn't change any settings at all regarding the power plan in windows. All settings are the ones that came with the laptop.

Hi Badger, thanks for your reply bytheway.

I always had extremely good care of the battery until the episode with the game that I previously described.

I think reaching so many times that low battery percentage (11%) while playing a full screen game (League of Legends), made it ignore the desktop warning, and hibernate the laptop upon reaching that 5% point. This made the battery drain easier as I would keep playing the game while charging the battery.

What I dont understand is what specifically caused the low battery warning to not show up in the first place and go straight to hibernation...doesnt make sense.

I dont think it has that Battery Health option that you mention. I mean, it show how much battery i have left, just like the battery icon in the desktop.... It only shows which mode you want to set: "High Performance", "Entertainment", "Quiet Office" or "Battery Saving".

As far as Im concerned, Power4Grid is a great program.

Thanks for your Reply ... I have been trying to find out more Information about it ... Could only find the following ...

ASUS Power4Gear automatically adjusts fan speeds for quiet computing and prolonged battery life. It allows the user to "overclock" (or speed up) the CPU which results in higher performance. Extreme Turbo can nearly double the processing power of your computer, but it also reduces battery life and increases heat.

I know that does not apply in your case ...

My problem has nothing to do with Power4Grid what so ever.

Just like you say, if you choose High Performance mode, its great for high cpu tasks but drains battery quicker and Battery Saving enhances the duration of the battery.

Your battery has probably came to the end of its life, they normally start to degrade considerably after a year.

Im pretty sure my battery is good as it still can keep as long as 2 hours when im doing college assignments on the laptop. What it happens is that when it reaches 15-20% battery left, the laptop shuts itself off.

That's the only problem I have: the laptop shuts itself off at 15-20% battery left for no apparent reason. Its as if the battery does not have strenght enought to hold those last 20 minutes remaining...

If anyone knows the reason that is causing this problem, I would be extremely grateful for your help.
