I bought this computer used and have totally reformatted and installed Win 7 64bit HP Service Pack 1. My problem started one night when I left the charger plugged-in to this laptop, a dell latitude E5410. I awoke at 1am and found my laptop to be turned on although I shut it down before going to bed.

At 6am, I noticed my laptop was turned on again. I updated the bios from A4 to A10 then to A16 which is the most current. I then entered the bios and looked around then reset it to the default settings.

I then went to my control panel and power options. It is set for high performance. Sleep and Hibernation buttons are disabled. Shut down button is set to shut down when pushed.

I then turned off my laptop and left the charging cable in it. Once again at 1am, I awoke to find my laptop turned on again. I checked my remote settings and it was disabled. I then went to control panel and clicked on services then disabled remote registry, computer browser, netlogon, server, and workstation.

I ran my malwarebytes antimalware pro version for a full scan and also my avg free full scan which is set to scan all files thoroughly including the files without extensions and rootkits. No viruses were found.

I turned off my laptop but this time, I removed the charging cable. That made a difference. I got up at 1am the following morning and the laptop was still turned off. When I then got up again at 6am, my laptop was still turned off.

Thinking I had finally solved my problem, I replugged the charging cable the following night before going to bed and noticed my laptop had once again, turned itself on at 1am.

I've looked all over this latop for anything that might pertain to the power cable but found nothing. Can anyone please tell me why my laptop turns on in the wee hours of every morning when the charging cabled is plugged-in but it does not turn on when the charging cable is removed?

In addition I would establish a Clean Boot, check the logs for clues, use the System Resources provided to check for Solutions as shown in Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

Then in addition type Scheduler in Start Search box, on left bar click on Library, check for scheduled tasks to make sure they are ones you want (probably not).

I suggest Balanced Power Plan, 30 minute sleep timeout, 60 minute Hibernate for ability to walk away from your work without concern if you come back in an hour or a week.

I have no reason to set it for hibernate because when I walk away from my laptop, I am done until the next day and I would rather my laptop shut down completely.

I've checked all the resources and it says nothing found and that there are not any devices armed to wake up my computer. I've been scanning my logs for the past several days and have yet to find anything in re to my problem. I've also surfed to eventid.net and entered the info there such as source and still found nothing wrong.

I guess the best thing to do now is to unplug the charger from it when I shut it down and only let it charge while I am using it.

Just so I'm clear on the issue:

The machine is powered off and it somehow powers on?

This only occurs when the power block is plugged in - not on battery only.

That is truly odd. The only thing I can think of, and it's a wild guess, is that when the power block is connected, it shorts the board and somehow powers up the machine. In other words, you have a bad connector on the mother board. It's a used machine, so anything is possible.

A member with more hardware experience might ... might be able to help you determine if that is the problem. Doing anything inside a laptop is more difficult than a desktop.

I turned off the laptop about 10pm and walked away. About 11, on my way to the bedroom, I noticed a light in my home office again and found my laptop had turned itself on again. I checked the logs and found nothing. I ran the powercfg again to see what my laptop had used to turn itself on with and found nothing there too. I ran the power troubleshooter and again found nothing. I'm at a loss. My laptop has a life of its own.

Rick, Please answer my previous question.

Difference being shut down or sleep mode.

thanks

See for some scheduled activities or simply close the lid of the laptop and it will not wake up.

I also did a double-take on that but since it was in the middle of Win7 version assume it is Home Premium.

To see if a program is trying to "call home", turn off internet time set and change your time zone by a few hours. Should indicate if internal or external wake up.
