Laptop will not close down after using Windows Media Player

I am using a new Dell laptop (Latitude 3540) and it seems to have a strange fault. When I play a DVD using WMP the laptop will not close down - there is no message about programmes that are open and there is nothing shown under applications in the task manager. I click on "shutdown, it goes through "logging off" to "shutting down" then just hangs.

This is further complicated by the fact that if I try and replicate the problem by part-playing a DVD (having first moved it towards the end so that just the last few minutes have played) then generally it will close down perfectly normally.

I am not a technical person but can generally resolve Windows issues by Googling around. With this problem I cannot seem to find anything anywhere that suggests a solution. Googling seems to produce problems with WMP not closing which is not the problem I have.

This issue is not life-threatening, just mildly irritating but I do not like to be beaten so I would be grateful for any thoughts.

First post so apologies if this is not the best forum for this query.

Thanks for the post and apologies for delay in responding.

I must admit I have not tried another media player - I guess it would be interesting to see if it works ok. I'll put a post on when I have the answer, but I still feel the need to sort this irritating quirk with WMP.

Thanks again.
