Hi everyone,

I just created this thread to fulfil a thought I had the other day. I was wondering what people's opinions were on laptops and desktops. I myself have always used a laptop as I need the portability but I know many people don't like the smaller size and the fact they are harder to service.

Which do you prefer? Laptop? Desktop? Or do you really not care what you use?

I voted desktops because I use a desktop as my primary computer. I do, however, use a laptop. I can lay down and use my laptop which is something that I can't do with my desktop.

They really are two different machines and they both have there place. I would add that with a top shelf laptop you can set it up as I have as a screen and CPU and then run a wireless mouse and keyboard along with an additional monitor and now you have a mobile desktop masquerading as a laptop.

I'm going to admit never to have owned a laptop untill early this year.
Found it to be a very usefull thing. Still lots I do with the desktop because it's the htpc and all. But for basic tasks, checking email etc., a laptop with a 14-15" screen is great. I can also run mine completely off solar my power system. That won't happen with the desktop, 2 monitors & a 37". Heck of a difference in footprints.

I myself only have access to a laptop and have had to get use to working on a smaller screen. It's quite a shock when I've been using the school desktops all day and then coming back to my 15 inch laptop. I do all sorts of stuff on my laptop, photo editing, video editing, being on here!, homework etc.

This is my work computer.
I have another laptop running Windows 7 64 bit.

I have both also. Actually, when I say "I have both", I mean that the lappy is only mine when the missus or one of the grandchildren are using it and something goes wrong.

'Big Box' is connected to a 24" Lyama monitor, have to readjust eyesight when allowed to return to the lappy!

But both have their place and I have always loved our 17" HP Pavilion DV7, at least since I removed all the krap HP software.

I need my big screens and use the laptop only for classes at the computer club - but there I sit such that I can read things from the big projected screen.

I hate to deal with the wife's laptops - which she loves. But I sometimes have to bail them out. Then I use the magnifier.

Why would you have a problem, Joan? Do you have a disability or vision problem? (I have disabilities, both wife and self have failing eyesight.)

Our lappy has a 17" widescreen and under Win7 there are ways to minimise vision and other accessibility problems. Try <Control Panel> <Ease of Access Centre> and there are many tools to help with this.

If you use a lappy mainly at home, you could also connect a separate monitor. Keyboards are usually OK, except for the smaller Netbooks. I would suggest a visit to a large computer reseller, just to try out the models there. Note down the model best suited to you, then buy cheaper online. (Cheeky, ;)I know, but works!)

EDIT:
Just noticed where you live. We have spent many happy holidays in West Wales, what a beautiful place to live.

Hubby's eyes are worse than mine so I know he'd have problems plus the keyboards on Laptops would present a problem for him. I know you can add a monitor or keyboard but then you're taking away the portability, which is after all the benefit of a laptop.

Although the main drawback at present is cost, he's only just had his machine, well late last year, so there's no way we can afford to buy another yet.

I agree it is nice living down here, so peaceful away from the madding crowd. ;)

i use my desktop when i'm at my desk, as it's got quite a bit of 'oomph', large screen, mouse and keyboard.

i use my laptop when i'm out-and-about, or in bed.
