Latest AMD Catalyst Video Driver for Windows 7

I don't want a lower version, i simply want to know if the support has now stopped in 9.4 for the older cards (like discussed long ago in this thread) as amd claimed.

The latest catalysts go from the 2000 series to latest 4000s there. You would need to find an older 7.x -8.x cat. for an anything older like the Radeon 9000s upto the X1000s. The 7.9 was about the first for the 2000s there.

heh heh, got it one I had 7048-68 nice and stable. 7077 not so much. It's even reintroduced the appcrash/freeze with a stuck sound loop from earlier builds

So has support now stoped in 9.4 for the older cards like radeon 9600?

I believe so. 9.3 was the last to support it.

The other AMD site simply carries the basic drivers only. There you select the model series you are running to get the correct driver set.

For arriving at AMD first and then not getting lost the way they have it set up now you select which you are looking for at AMD.com | Support & Downloads

That only gave me the option of 9.3 or 9.4 - Not very helpful if I wanted both CCC and cat 8.10 for example. (some people do )

9.2 - supports the 9600 and other cards
9.3 - supports the 9600 and other cards (i think but have not tried yet)
9.4 - Does it still support the older cards or has the support stopped like amd said it would?

Before downloading anything the best thing to look at is the release notes for any update that shows which model lines as well as versions of Windows one will support.



Now above what is seen there the 3000s are listed along with the 4600s and other models. That simply show the 2000s when looking for the catalyst and drivers for Vista/7. For an older 9xxx model you would select XP or Vista since none are seen for 7.

well according to the inf files there it goes until the x500/x700 series
as i cannot see anything older than that...
so for the 9600 series i guess no more in 9.4...

As I was saying before you have to go back into the Cat. 7s and 8s as the last seeing any support for the 9xxx series while selecting the XP or Vista option. There is no 7 support going back that far while Vista drivers will usually work if you still have an older card.

At least the updates AMD put out cover a larger number there over what was seen before AMD bought ATI out. When the X1xxx series first came out ATI dropped all support for the 9xxx!

Thats just incorrect, 9.2 supports 9600, i am using it RIGHT now in vista sp2.

yeah they unnofficially support the 96xx in 9.3....
they only show in the release notes the ones officially supported by amd....
(meaning its there but its not getting the usual bigfixes these hd cards are having...)
and to anwser your q's yeah its supported under 9.3....
the two build strings in 9.3...

"ATI RADEON 9600/X1050 Series" = ati2mtag_RV350, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4150&SUBSYS_300017AF
"ATI RADEON 9600/X1050 Series Secondary" = ati2mtag_RV350, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4170&SUBSYS_300117AF

they have unoficial support as far as the 9500 series...

We posted at the same time, i was refering to nighthawks post.

I asked here as i was discussing this with others in this thread a while back, and the amd site gives little info about the newer drivers supporting older cards.

What you are not looking at is which version of Windows is selected but which catalyst version. While Vista drivers will work in 7 and still have the same catalyst number that doesn't necessarily mean the 7 equivalent supports certain older cards.

If you select XP as the OS the release notes will list the older models without question. Those go back to the 7xxx series. The Vista equivalent only goes back to the 9xxx Radeons there. But those should work well on 7 while not being the 7 Cat. 9.4 which by the way went on here without a problem for the second temp for the 7077.

What all that shows is that the 9xxx seires isn't going to be supported by AMD on 7. For the most those would be older AGP cards to start off with. While the 9s up through the latest are supported for Vista it seems AMD is dropping the X1xxx series there as well.

I use multiple operating systems, i obviously use the correct one for each os, all i wanted to know was if they had dropped support in 9.4. They have.

And 9600 is un-officially supported in 9.3, thats good enough for me.

So, i will be now using 9.3_vista for vista and 9.3_7 for 7.. simples

Haven't had much to say, 9.4 still hasn't answered my problems, still on my fall back card (Nvidia) and testing my 4850 X2 when changes are made, new os/cat. Same driver problems installing and no multi-display. No replys form any of the card support people. I guess there busy.

The best way to see the necessary drivers go on for an older is to go for the last Vista update available for that series. When the release notes are showing support for the 2xxx models and newer those are referring to the newer designs seen with the chips on the cards themselves being supported having the correct drivers.

When simply tossing any drivers on and still seeing an old card work is mainly due to the generic drivers included in Windows taking over. The best and smart move is not to install any at first with a fresh install of Windows but wait for the updates to show optional hardware updates to allow that to see the correct ones installer.

Or without the catalyst the alternate move is to download the set needed by going through the selection process choosing the model series at the support site. The main reason for not seeing official support goes right back to the newer vpu chips seen on the progress model lines where the drivers/catalysts are written to work with those.

At least AMD covered more model lines then ATI did. With ATI after every 3 or 4 catalyst updates one model line would be dropped entirely! In fact the 9xxx was already history when AMD first bought ATI out. They just picked up from there and started offering support up until Vista.

Hello everyone. I've installed Windows 7 on a Dell Inpsiron 6400 with an ATI M54 x1400 graphics card. I cannot set the resolution to 1680x1050 as it was previously. I have installed Catalyst 9.3, but the x1400 is not listed when I attempt to manually install the driver. The x1400 driver from Dell's site also does not work. I am running an Intel T7200 Core 2 Duo 64 bit processor and Windows 7 is also build 7077 and 64 bit.

Any suggestions? Tried to do a driver search without the Catalyst package, but the page told me "AMD no longer supports or provides drivers for older laptops, desktops only blah blah, contact your manufacturer for driver downloads," and Dell has nothing
