Great news

Hiyya Airbot They are some really good additions ESPECIALLY the Ashampoo killer - I had no end of trouble with that wretched stuff on my old XP.

Have never used their stuff since - they (Ashampoo) do an awful lot of free stuff on the PC magazine disks here in Oz, and it didn't occur to me then (noob) but I thought it was just the mag being generous. That was of course until you wanted to remove every last trace of their program!

Am going to update mine now.

Cheers!!

I've been a CCleaner fan for many years but have recently grown to distrust the Registry Cleaner part of the program. I'd had a number of problems with video and image thumbnail files failing to show properly and then the Turn Windows Features On or Off went blank (Start Icon -> Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Turn Windows features on or off = blank window).

I traced this problem back to deleting registry entries with CCleaner and wondered if it wasn't time that CCleaner started showing which registry entries were fully safe to delete and which could be a bit risky - like Wise Registry Cleaner.

Wise and all registry cleaners are making guesses about which keys are safe and which are risky. The creators of the registry cleaners do not have the core coding of Win 7. The solution is to only delete a registry key you are 100% certain it is safe to delete. If there is the slightest doubt, don't delete the key. It will not hurt anything to leave the key in the registry - unless it belongs to malware. But that is another subject.

This is why CCleaner offers to back up the Registry before each and every Registry cleaning. You did make a CCleaner Registry backup didn't you? I've used it before and it restores the Registry perfectly!

Yes I backed up all of the registry entries I'd deleted with CCleaner but it would of been a real pain to go through restoring all the deleted entries as I didn't know when the problem started (I don't turn Windows Features on or off that often). In the end I just restored an earlier version of the entire registry that I'd backed up with Regedit.

Seventy Nine- I rarely use the Registry Cleaning feature in CCleaner because it finds so few results, but I'm glad that you could come up with a full Registry Backup to use.

I can't remember when the last time was that I used the CCleaner Registry Cleaner, but I did a scan and these are the results. It looks like I will wait a while longer before I use it...

Agree

Yes agree with those comments on the reg cleaner I did get a lot of "unused" "obsolete" etc etc and unless you are prepared to Google or whatever each entry then you on thin ice. I only delete just the ones I KNOW are useless.

The only ones I tick in the cleaner bit are temp net files. cookies (see below),Thumbnail cache, Recyc bin. temp files.clipboard. mem dumps, chkdsk files frags ( do this on a regular basis too). Apps - all bar Sun Java & game exp.

Now the cookies are a different kettle of fish. Completely screwed my laptop ones yesterday when I uniinstalled / reinstalled CC and yeah it got rid of the little bugga that I had and that wouldn't shift BUT in Windows list I forgot to untick the taskbar jumps, autocomplete, and recently typed URL's and had to spend over 3 hours getting password reset and MOST importantly (for me) the favourites bar quick start (already logged in) set up again. Could have ruddy cried so anyone out there doing same be VERY careful what is ticked or not and you have your cookies you want in the save box.

Anyway got a clean pair of underpants on this morning lol!!

Thanks, Shawn!

I'll be downloading it as soon as they put the Slim Build on their page, i really don't know why they put always the regular installer and the portable one.. and leave the slim for last  i could just say no to whatever the full installer asks me to install, but meh.. i like the Slim one hehe :p

Thanks again.

By opting out of the standard CCleaner offerings it becomes the slim build, is that not correct...
