LCD Monitor Screen Burn in...

I have a 22 inch LCD Monitor. I'm pretty sure it's an LCD Monitor I purchased it off someone from craigslist. When I first got it an turned it on the colors weren't as vivid and it seemed like there was a film over the screen. As the screen warms up though it looks fine. I ran the windows color calibrate wizard and ended up turning the gamma ALL the way down for it looked better. Ever since then though I've been experiencing some screen burn in. doesn't seem like it's permanently damaged and it goes away but it still concerns me. Should I turn the gamma back up? Or is it possible my screen is going out?

LCD monitors do not burn in. CRT monitors burn in because the phosphor on the back of the glass gets etched or burned. LCD screens use liquid crystal display elements that are backlight to produce the image. The worst that can happen is a diode gets stuck on or off. When that happens its usually just one or two diodes so you end up with a dot or two that are the wrong color and won't change color. It sounds more like your backlight is failing. Older LCD screens use what is the equivalent to a florescent tube for the backlighting. They will eventually wear out and dim. The power supply that feeds the tube can also fail.

LCD monitors can have burnt on image damage.
its caused by luminance degradation of the light emitting pixels. basically they loose their ability to switch on and off and or colour.

this is not to be confused with transient picture persistance, which is caused when the pixels hold their charge and refuse to give it up causing ghosting, but that isnt perminant.

the reason modern LCD and plasma tvs dont get image burn is because television shows logos at the top of the screen move back and forth an inch or so. so that the pixels get chance to change.
