What would be "out in the wild" at this time would most likely be a modified IT developers early version modified and may contain some form of malware. When going through MS you are getting it direct from the original "genuine" source!

With the genuine item you benefit from actual support as well as the option to provide feedback and suggestions. When going to order a dinner at a fine restaurant do you want a good meal or "mystery meat"?(excluding vegatarians of course ) I prefer the real deal.

On October 6, 2010, Softpedia reports that Microsoft released a Release Candidate Escrow of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 build "6.1.7601.17104" only available to Select Testers and close partners of Microsoft.[124]
Current official release of Service Pack 1 is slated for the first half of 2011, according to its website.[125]

That is what makes the process interesting, figuring out why something went wrong, if in fact it does. I am not advocating this for everybody. I have 4 OS installations, on 2 computers, with several Acronis images of each OS. If one gets messed up, ATI to the rescue.

Using "leaked" software/updates is a personal choice. As with the topic of the best AV, broswer, etc., we are not always going to agree. We have a forum here to present our views, based on our experiences. These views/experiences, when combined, can be used as "to do"/"not to do" guide for all.

No offense meant to anybody with opposing views, including my 4 ex-wives.

Well here is my view. Infecting a computer just to see if I can fix it; not for me. I would suggest getting Microsoft any thing from Microsoft only. What one does with there own computer is of course there business. I'm sure this web site is not here to teach people how to infect there computer. IMHO we are here to help people stop from getting infected and things working smoothly.

no thanks. I never install service packs until a slipstreamed version on an install disk is available. compclean just isn't good enough.

Does this mean you don't update the installed version of the OS, but rather do a clean install with the SP slipstreamed into the original OS install DVD?

Is there a particular reason for this method, or personal choice?

Just to clarify, I had the beta installed through windows update so when I checked updates today it had this listed.

This RC signals the last public beta build to be released prior to the Release to Manufacturing (RTM) final release.
