I am running my system with XP 32bit on drive C, and win 7 64bit on drive I.
when I load steam it is very slow and when I try to install left 4 dead it says please try installation again after getting to 100% complete, so I have done this many times and keeps giving me this error finally I try to run the game in spite of this error and it loads fine then there is no sound (no music, not talking, on dialogue, no nothing).
my first conclusion was that my sound card was not recognized (sound card: sound blaster Live! value) even though it works in apps like skype after using the drivers aforementioned in another thread (because it was not supported in vista nor Windows 7)
So is anyone else having a sound card problem?
I have also toyed with the idea of removing the sound card and using onboard sound however I am unsure of the process.
EDIT
Ok, so I fixed the sound issue, seems that windows 7 has the ability to give one program total control of your sound device, I found this in sound settings and disabled it sound now works in all my programs.
however, I am still having sluggish performance and steam decides to not respond at times then comes back.
