Solved Library - display order, arrange/sort by, default save location

I have found that if you arrange the order of the libraries (in my case 3 each for documents, pictures, video, music) via move up/down (right-click when pulling up LOCATIONS link), it changes the way it shows in the left-hand library "tree" > view. But, it seems that you need to sort by library name to get my D library to show at the TOP.

Additionally, I'm confused by the default save location. If I do a "save as" of a pic on a webpage, when the save applet/file opens, it defaults to C:\Users\Jim and NOT the D:\Libraries\Pictures as has been set by me as default.

As well, some times, the pulldown for save file TYPE has ONLY .bmp shown. I can't save a jpg. I haven't figured out the pattern as to why this occurs, but I usually have to close all IE and Windows Explorer windows and retry to get .jpg as an option.

Can anyone figure out why my default save location is not honored (in this example for PICTURES). Whenever the "save" applet comes up, it's pointing to C:\users\Jim\iTunes\album?cache (can't recall last node name). It never did this before.

Hi Jim, I don't know about the defualt save, but for saving pics from the web it will save as the same format the pic is in.

Understood but that's not what's happening. I'm 100% sure it's a JPG but the only pulldown option will be .BMP. It seems related to my user-default not being honored and always pointing to iTunes albumcache. I tried various websites. The only solution is to shut down IE and restart a new window and try again. I couldn't find a pattern to the behavior...

Could be iTunes trying to take over things. The save to choice for me is always Pictures for an image or Documents if text, etc. Here is a .jpg try saving it to see if you still have only the .bmp option and the itunes folder.

That works. But trying to save your avatar (gif) shows only bmp and png save options.

Found this one.

Internet Explorer Saves Images As default BMP only

"
When you try to save an image in Microsoft Internet Explorer, the image will only save by the default bmp only. For example, when you right-click an image on a Web page, and then click Save Picture As, the file name that appears is Untitled, and the file type that appears is .bmp, instead of the right file name and type.

This behavior occurs when a Damaged or Unknown program file (active or java) is downloaded to the downloaded program files folder.

To troubleshoot and resolve this, empty the contents of the Temporary Internet Files folder, and then delete any files in the Downloaded Program Files folder that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged.
Save an image in Internet Explorer to test and determine if the issue is resolved.

If the issue continues to occur after you remove all downloaded program files that are listed as Unknown or Damaged, try removing the other downloaded program files that are on the list. Note: The next time that you need one of the files that you removed from the Downloaded Program Files folder, you will receive a prompt to download the file to your harddisk in Internet Explorer.
"

I also now recall that MSE caught a virus of some type I got from visiting a "normal" webpage. Maybe some connection? MSE reported it cleaned it up effectively.

Aha. Using MS Paint, SAVE AS does point to the correct default library (my D drive). Per the above, in the "downloaded files" folder, I have 2 igdtoolx.inf and dll files that date 3/27/2007 which is 3 years before I ever got this new PC off the ground. Those ARE related to an ACTIVEX IE component.

Renamed the igdtoox files in downloaded folder. No difference. Delete TIF and no difference.

My avatar was created and uploaded as a .png but the forum seems to change them to .gif when applied.
I have found by right clicking on *most* web images you will get a context menu which has Copy in it. Then I can use right click, say, my desktop and Paste and it works albeit with some odd file name. Also in a graphics editor like Paint the Edit/Paste function works too.
The virus may have some connection.

Well, I decided to poke around. I have show hidden files specified. My TIF are on my D drive. I right-click that TIF folder and it says there are X files and 44 folders. When I BROWSE the TIF, there is nothing present but files. No folders. No index.dat or anything.

The ORIGINAL TIF on my C drive (buried in appdata) has FOLDERS:

Content.ie5
Low
Virtualized
desktop.ini

Content.ie5 has index.dat and what should be there (other cryptically named folders).

What's weird is as part of this attempted solution earlier this week, I DELETED all my TIF (except for passwords and the 3 bottom check options) yet the TIF is 2G in size and has stuff from early 2010 in it (last accessed).

Probably got corrupted somehow. Will move, delete and move back to D.

I now recall. You can't seem to move TIF from the control panel -> Internet Options. It will log you off and when you come back, the TIF location will be the same. It seems you have to move it from IE being opened. However, in my case, the NEW TIF has all the garbage from the old TIF copied and that TIF is then also missing content.ie5, index.dat and everything else necessary.

Researching...

Aha. Because the old C drive TIF are no longer in use, you can just browse the true content. You can NOT do so even if hidden folder view is enabled for an ACTIVE TIF. However, in start -> search, specifying "shell:cache" WILL show you the true content of the currently active TIF folder.

So, I'm still not quite sure how to physically delete my OLD TIF (since MOVE FOLDER copies everything) and start a new one from scratch.

Cleaned up TIF, delete everything (except some small offline content). No change. IE still points to my c \users \ Jim \ My Pictures library. It may be that IE simply uses the registry settings for shell folders, but then what's the point of libraries?

FWIW, my TIF was 2 GIGabytes in size even though I have nowhere near that specified for its max.

Wow. I've been playing with system image/system backup and during the backup, MSE kicked out a severe Java infection that prevented the backup from completing. After removing that, right-click now defaults to the correct location.

Good to hear Jim! You can use Libraries to point to any folder on your PC, external (attached) Drive, networked PC or drive.
