Library Question

Hi,

I'm having some trouble arranging my photo library uisng the the Day or Month options.

I have added a folder with my photo's to the Library, and it is arranged using the Folder option. If I click on the pull-down list and select any other option (e.g. Day) then it simply goes back to Folder (see image). I can't seem to select any other option apart from Folder.

Does anyone know why this might be?

Update :

Been doing some research : the problems appears related to corruption in the INDEXING. See below:

The suggested fix seems to be creating a new user profile - quite an extreme and unorthodox "fix" to say the least. Microsoft really needs to look into this more.

This poses a conundrum for me, since I have turned OFF indexing since my C: is a SSD (and that is where the Library is stored/acccessed) but my photo's are physically saved in E: (spinner drive). I don't think turning OFF indexing is the cause of the problem since its not mentioned in the link above.

Anyone using a SSD have the same problems? BTW : you will see this issue simply by trying to arrange the default Sample Pictures under Public Pictures (see below).

No, I don' think so. I created the Library from scratch/brand new and it behaved this way from the start. No idea how it could corrupt at first setup.

I suspect this is related to INDEXING, so I guess I should ask:

Can libraries be arranged if indexing is turned off?

Yep, that is correct.

Disabling the index, or disable Windows Search service, in Windows 7 will cause you to no longer be able to do searches or use Arrange by in Libraries.

Do you know if its possible to index only a single location (ie. my Library)? I am hesitant to turn on indexing for everything since this would be on my SSD, and I want to avoid indexing that.

Perhaps I should re-visit the benefits or not, of turning off indexing on my SSD?

What do you mean "you created the Libraries" from scratch.

The Libraries are already part of the system, if you've altered them in some way,its obviously screwed them up.

Restore to a point before you "created" them.

System Restore is unneccessary : the underlying Library structure hasn't been altered or changed.

By "created from scratch" I mean added/associated files to the Library.

Hi Golden. If you just want to index the Library and don't want the indexer to crawl through your SSD, you could always store the folders you want in your Library on another drive. Then you could turn on and modify the index to include only those folders (from the 'other drive') you've added to the Library. I think this would constitute having the Library indexed.

Anyway, it shouldn't be too much effort to try, and easy to confirm if it works by checking for your missing 'Arrange by' options after you've finished. It may need time to index before you see results.

Yep - thats they way I was thinking James - I'll give that a go and see if it works.

Turning ON indexing fixes this issue - I will have a play and see if I can get away with just indexing some select locations.
