Just yesterday I was playing around with recording settings. I had made Stereo Mix my default device. Although when I went back to line in(blue) as my Default, it suddenly decided to stop working? It says the mic is plugged in, but still not working. I tried plugging my mic into Line in (pink) and it worked, but not properly. Help?

If you have Stereo Mix set as the default (normal setting) then whatever is input, whether the Blue Line In, the Pink Mic should be detected and heard on your PC speakers and if you have a recording program, select the Stereo Mix (some systems this is System Mixer and SoundBlaster calls this What You Hear) as the recording source.

If you can't get it to work resetting to Stereo Mix, use the System Restore and restore the PC back to a date when it did work. System Restore will not detele any user data or e-mails. System Restore can be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools.

By System tools I supposed you're talking about System configuration > Tools?

I found System Restore, but it's telling me it's off. So I turned it on, giving me this error:

"The filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect, (0x8007007B)"

As for the stereo mix, it isn't set to default anymore. It was normally set to disabled. The problem only appeared once I disabled it. In fact here are the steps I took:

-Enable Stereo Mix
-disable Line in
-disable Stereo Mix
-Enable Line in
-Line in still recognizes the mic but not any sounds
-Open Realtek HD audio manager
-Make it so I can identify both the pink and blue line in, compared to Line in normally being one input.
-Plug mic in Line in Pink
-Recognizes mic and voice
-It plays back everything I say.
-Check settings, made sure the "listen to device" setting wasn't checked.
-Googled for help
-Gave up
-Came here

Too bad System Restore is not working - it's saved my butt many times and made me look like "super tech" when working with PC clients. But that is a separate issue that needs to be resolved.

Not sure what you have, are you saying that the "line in" is acutally a dual Line In and Mic input? I would make sure all the inputs are enabled in the Sound/Recording panel. Stereo Mix shouldn't make a difference - all that does is take whatever input and makes that available to whatever application and also plays the input on the PC's speakers.

If enabling everything doesn't help, the sound may be corrupt with Windows and in that case go to the Device Manger, RIGHT click on the entry for the RealTek to highlight it and then LEFT click "Uninstal" - DO NOT check the box to also uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will will detect and reinstall the sound. This seems to fix many problems and if your luck will fix yours.

Unfortunately that didn't work. I tried two things, uninstalling without getting rid of the drivers, and uninstalling the drivers. Both didn't work, I appreciate the help anyways. I'll try and find a way to fix it.

Have a nice day!
