List of recently typed commands in the "Run" box?

In Windows XP, when I clicked "Run" on the Start Menu, opening up a box to type commands into, I would also see a list of recently typed commands, that I could choose from. I found this handy, as one often uses the same command more than once, and then one does not need to type it again.

That does not work for me in Windows 7, SP1. The Run box works, but I never see commands that I typed in before, and I always have to type in the commands from scratch.

How can I get that (list of recently typed commands) back into the Run box in Windows 7? A registry tweak?

I don't know if it is just my system, or whether that capability is turned off by default in Win 7. The default should be ON, however, as I think it was in XP, as I think most users would find that convenient.

Anyhow--how do I get that function back in Win 7?

Not sure why it doesn't work for you. On mine, there is a down arrow on the far right of the run box, when I click on it a list of previous commands is displayed.

I followed Step 1 of the tutorial, looked in Internet Options, Autocomplete, it was already on for everything, including the Address Bar.

So, even though auto-complete is set to On (including the Address Bar) in IE, it does not work in Windows Explorer.

Edit--I just realized that it does work in some aspects of Windows Explorer. For instance, if I start typing something into a Search box, autocomplete shows suggestions from recent searches. It just does not work in "Run".

Any ideas of what else to try?

I have IE9 installed (latest update). Might that make a difference?

IE9 wouldn't make any difference.

Strange, have you recently deleted your browsing history or autocomplete history? If so, it may take a bit to repopulate.

No. I just delete the cache, I never delete my browsing history. And also, I hardly ever use IE. My FIrefox settings won't influence Windows Explorer.

Furthermore, it does not remember what I typed in 30 seconds ago, so it is not a question of repopulating a large cache.

And--as I said--it only does not work in the RUN menu. Autocomplete works everywhere else, including Windows Explorer search, etc.

I do regularly use CCleaner. However, I have always had that option to clean the cache of "Run in Start Menu" unchecked, as I want to keep that auto-complete memory.

Furthermore, if I type a command in Run, then do so again directly afterwards (no use of Ccleaner in between), there is still no auto-complete at all in the Run menu. It does not remember what I typed a few seconds earlier.

I still have not found a solution to this, so would appreciate it if anyone has any further insight into the problem. I find that I really miss having Autocomplete in the Run box.

Perhaps I should mention, in case it makes any differnce, that I have IE9 installed (latest build, as of last month), and Win 7 SP1, also latest updates as of last month.

You might see if running a sfc /scannow command may help if it may be able to find and fix any corrupted system files that may be responsible.

I have done that too. Still no autocomplete in the Run dialog.

Could there be a registry setting I need to make, to enable it specifically (not only in the IE settings)?

That's the only one that I know of to turn it off and on.

As a test, create a new user account to see if it works while logged in it or not to see it may just be something with your current user account.
