Local internet only, no adapters showing in ipconfig

I was trying to install the iCloud desktop client on my PC, but I got a Windows generated error (something like "An error occured during the installation of assembly microsoft.vc80.crt"); I decided that if I restarted my PC it might work. In the process of restarting, Windows updates were installed. After login, the internet connection was showing as Limited access only (something which has been happening a lot, but a restart of the router normally fixes it - I think my router is really rubbish when more than 8 or so devices are trying to connect. This time, a restart did nothing, and plugging an ethernet cable in also made no difference.

I have completed about 5 system restores to before the update and before other recent installs to see if I could fix it, but it seemed that the computer reinstalled the updates on restart, and it made no difference to the internet connection. I ran ipconfig /all to find almost no results. I have reset the winsock stuff that is recommended for problems similar to this on lots of forums and even tried a clean driver install (which actually made things worse - no networks were being found by the wireless at all, so I went to roll back to the previous driver, which was greyed out, so I restored again, now I get limited connectivity once more.

I should also mention that it still doesn't work in Safe Mode.

I have included a screenshot to show ipconfig /all results.

Something else to mention - I used to have McAffee, but uninstalled it and used the MCPR tool and then installed Comodo Internet Security, which was working really well with no issues at all. For some unknown reason, it has been uninstalled completely - it's not showing in Add/Remove Programs and the Start Menu shortcut goes nowhere. I have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, so have used that to scan for viruses this morning.

I am at a loss as to what to do, any suggestions would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance!

Since so many things happened since the initial cause.
I would go ahead and make sure no system files were messed with using this.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

Afterwards you may want to seriously consider a restore point.
We have no idea what the software installation was doing when it failed. It could have been in the middle of setting up vpn data for the cloud software.
I'll hold off on more drastic measures until you can give those two things a shot.

I did the sfc /scannow command, but it found no errors (I ran it a few times, just to be sure). I have tried a restore a few times, but no difference .

Any more ideas? I've been trying loads of different things all day! :S

Hello,

In addition....Please verify that Comodo is completely uninstalled. I use Revo Uninstaller Free to uninstall programs.
If Comodo is really removed from your computer, it looks like you don't have any Anti-virus software installed, Malwarebytes is Anti-spyware program. You should consider installing Avast Free Anti-virus, MSE or Panda Cloud AV.
Also..... Click on Start and right click Computer, choose Manage, go to Device Manager, expand network adapters, do you see your Network adapters? Are there any of these symbols- ? X or !

Hi, thanks for your response.

Firstly, I used read a similar comment on another website about making sure Comodo was completely uninstalled and already used Revo to check - it showed no entry for Comodo, but there was one for PC Doctor (or similar, it came with Comodo) which I uninstalled and I did a forced uninstall of COMODO and COMODO Internet Security, which found quite a few files.

I have installed Avast and have run a scan, which found nothing.

The device manager shows both network adapters (Ethernet and WiFi) and indicates that they are both working correctly.

I am at a loss as to what to do! :S

After some reading around on this problem it seems that you must uninstall the Bonjour service in order for this iCloud to work at all. I can't tell if this has anything to do with the network problem but uninstalling Bonjour might help. You might also consider a hard reset of the router.

Two comments from this page. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3383128?start=0&tstart=0

Hi

I have been having problems with iTunes and Outlook when I install iCloud on my windows 7 64bit

Everytime I installed iCloud, it would not let me open iTunes or outlook and the computer would freeze.

so i had to uninstall iCloud to allow me to work outlook and iTunes

However after weeks of trying different advice - none would work UNTIL if you uninstall bonjour from your windows 7 64bit and then re install iCloud - this then works.

Microsoft have come up with a solution

It's called Microsoft Fixit
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall

It allowed me to uninstall Bonjour with the standard Control Panel Uninstall could not (I got the same error message as the OP; I also got the same error message when trying to upgrade iTunes to 10.5.3)

With Bonjour uninstalled using Fixit, I upgraded iTunes successfully, then installed the iCloud Control Panel.

If you are trying to install new Apple software on your Windows 7 64 bit PC and are getting error messages that suggest a problem with Bonjour - especially ones that imply the installer needs to be 64 and not 32 bit, then you will not get anywhere without installing Bonjour first, either using Control Panel or failing that in this way.

Trying Administrator privileges will not work.

Hi, thanks for your response. I have uninstalled both iCloud and Bonjour using Revo, but this has made no difference to the network connection. Also, a hard reset of the router wouldn't fix the problem, as it doesn't matter which AP I try, the problem still occurs. :(

Anybody got any other ideas?

Just a thought, but.....have you tried a different router/modem?

I had 'limited connection' issues recently, albeit intermittently, and
it was traced to an intermittent fault in the wireless modem.

Re-setting would sometimes, but NOT always, get the connection
back, sometimes immediately, sometimes not for hours or days.

A replacement modem removed the issue completely.

Hi Tom,

Sorry of the tardiness, been very busy at work.

Can we try uninstalling the network adapters again? This time please uninstall them from Safe Mode with Networking (restart your computer, continue tapping F8 then select this option). It's best to use the current drivers, so make sure that you download the latest drivers then manually install them. Run the ipconfig/all again in an elevated command and post it here please.

I just ended up using the HP Recovery Manager to take the whole computer back to factory settings. All works now. Thanks for your suggestions.
