Solved Local Network Issue

If am trying to share files / printer between to Win 7 computers on the same network. From one of the computers neither the homegroup or the network will work. I can see the other computer in the homegroup but I can't access the files.

With network, it tells me the network provider name is invalid. I will not even allow me to access the network folders on the local machine.

The machine has a single administrator account. I think that there is something wrong with the administrator privileges, but I am not sure what.

I have tried most of the things mention in this forum to right the problem, but nothing works. There was a suggestion to scan the system files for corrupted or broken files. It writes a log file at the end of this process. I couldn't examine the file because there is something wrong with my administrator privileges.

So HELP please.

Hi there,

If you're sure that the Homegroup in your network is setup correctly try creating a new account as Administrator from the problematic computer and see if you're able to access the shared network resources. Compare the ipconfig/all output of this computer to another working computer. If there's any discrepancies please post both ipconfig/all output in your next post.

I created a new Administrator account as you suggested. Unfortunately, the experience is the same.

I have done all of this and the result is still the same.

From the good pc when I try to access the bad computer over the network I get
Windows cannot access \\DELL-LAPTOP

When I run the network diagnostics I get an error that says
file and print sharing resource (DELL-LAPTOP) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts

I think maybe I see a problem -- in the ipconfig stuff it refers to the bad computer as "Dell-PC" and the the Network refers to it as DELL-LAPTOP.

Do you think this could be a problem?

Is the computer name Dell PC and Dell laptop 2 different computers?

First, let me thank you for your assistance. I stumbled across the solution because I was looking at the settings for the network card on the bad pc (DELL-LAPTOP). The client for Microsoft Networks was missing as was file and printer sharing. Once I added them to the list, the problems disappeared! I don't know why they weren't there in the first place.

This has been a most frustrating experience.
