Logging off troubles!

I'm currently running windows 7 beta build 7000, and whenever I shut down my computer the "safe" way(by pressing the shut down button in the start menu) the computer always gets stuck on the logging off screen. My desktop dissapears,as it should, but then the logging of screen comes up with the windows 7 background and my computer just stops the shut down process right there. How do I fix it?

Have you tried just logging off to see if that works. In my limited experience, when the system hangs as you are describing, something is misbehaving. You might check the event log to see if anything shows up, and make note of the time is happens so you can compare events.

You might also open task manager to see if anything is still running just before you shutdown.

that was a symptom for toshiba laptops especially under vista, but my 2 laps shut down brilliantly under win7. if you have had any need to load your vista chipset drivers, do you have anything that may attempt to load such as flashkeys (dont run under win7 here and dont care) to change quick lap settings from the desktop?

you might want to try shutting down your wireless connection manually before shutdown, that was a vista/toshiba issue as well but prone on some other mfr systems as well. let us know how you get on.

saltgrass offerred some good advice, if need be, log off and then shutdown, but somethings definately up. my shutdown used to run in excess of four minutes, now down to 17 seconds plus or minus.

An idea. Might just be some registry errors.
Try using CCleaner. Download here, it's free.
Install, configure, run the registry scan, fix issues, run cleaner, restart.

Let us know how this works out for yah ;)

I've tried your ideas, but it still hasn't shut down properly. Just before it goes into the logging off screen as different screen quickly flashes onto the screen. I think it is something along the lines of a force quit screen because I think it says something like "Do you wish to close the following programs before you shut down the system. The system will automatically shut down the application.", but im not sure because it is seriously on the screen for like a second. The application on the screen is Windows Explorer I think???

When i go into the tasks manager before I shut down there are no programs running, which is why i'm confused...

Hmmm...

Please try this simple registry tweak that might sort out your shut down issue.

Press Win+R
Type regedit
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Modify the "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" value to 5000

This will shorted the time windows wait for an application to shutdown on it's own thus eliminating the problems of some programs taking too long to finish its process threads.

Click on task manager and see what's running. Sometimes your antivirus app or possibly another program is preventing shutdown/log off problems.

Also, give it some time...

Sammy 7,

Have you checked the Event Viewer to see if you are getting any warnings or error messages? Note the time when you shutdown to compare time markers.

Check processes as well as applications. When you get ready to shutdown, go in and end different processes to see if any of them make a difference.

Do you have your anti-virus doing a check prior to shutdown?

Like a few others said, try other methods of shutdown.
try the classic .bat file.

Open notepad and type (or copy) this: "shutdown -s -f -t 0" without the quotes.
Save as> all files> filename.bat

Test that and let us know.
If that works, I may know a reg tweak that will work.

I'm having this problem also. I have a Dell Latitude D630, and started having this issue shortly after install (maybe a week after).

I tried turning on the laptop, but not logging in. Then I clicked the shut down icon, and the computer shut down with no problem. I also enabled "Guest" profile on the computer so I could see if it's having the same problem outside of my profile. It is. I can switch users, turn off the computer, outside of either profile with no problem (as long as I don't log in, no problem shutting down the system).

Obviously, the issue isn't with shutting down, but it's having a problem logging off only, so you don't get a chance to get to where the system shuts down.

My computer does this every time, and will not (log off so I can) shut down at all, until I either force quit (hold the power button down) or remove the battery.

Has anyone found a solution for this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Well, I had removed my passcode from my profile on the laptop about the time I started having this problem. I don't know if this was actually related to that, but I replaced it and the laptop logs off and shuts down with no problem now. I had also turned off some startup programs, too, so I don't know if it may have been that, either. Either way, the problem seems to be over.

Why are you "logging off' when you "open" your computer. Please clarify what you mean.

Welcome to the Seven Forums, smithal! :)

Are you able to log on at all or does your computer immediately take you back to the log-off screen?

Do you have a password protected log-on or do you usually boot right into Windows without the log-on screen?
