Long Logon Time

Hello all,

I work at a College and help manage student labs that run Windows 7 Enterprise. Each machine has the same software (about 90 packages) and thus it usually has a large Default User profile (about 300-400 Kb) which we trim down to about 80kb. For some reason it still takes anywhere from 2-5 minutes to log into a machine. I don't think that this should be the case and it should be way faster than this. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas about what may be slowing down a logon?

Check out the following utility. More complete that msconfig, you will see everything that is involved in starting up. You should be able to streamline your startup, and avoid superfluous programs.

Autoruns for Windows

For the above, I was assuming it was not a network issue. If it is, check to see if you are autonegotiating, if there is insane traffic on the network (using a sniffer), you could hard code the DNS, etc.

Thanks for the tip. I don't think that it is because of a slow network (practically no one is using it right now and it is all 1GB).

How many programs are starting up with Win7? For quickest startup time, least CPU/RAM freeloading, and less spying you really only need the AV to start up with Windows. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1401-startup-programs-change.html

Next study the Performance log to see if a driver or app is hanging startup: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Performance Information and Tools\Advanced Tools. Look for cued issues at top of Tools list, Generate a System Health Report. For example, I had a cued issue warning me that Acronis I just installed was slowing my Startup.

Another way to see if a driver might be hanging Windows is to type "driver verifier" in Start Search box and run it.

Thanks for the tips. I will be sure to look into those tools. As far as I know we don't have too much auto-start (AV, Print Quota program, and that is it).
