Looking for help with screen freezing BSOD issues

No I don't have any codec packs installed.

I've completed a fresh install of FF5 in safe mode with a new profile. I have updated that new profile with my bookmarks only.

I have updated all those other plugins you listed save for Flash and Shockwave, they both keep stalling, so I guess there is a server problem their end?

Edit: have now updated Flash & Shockwave also.

So far no change, I am still getting freezing events in the same fashion as before.

Hardware acceleration is enable? Go to Tools > Options > Advanced > General and uncheck its box.
You didn't answer me: Freezes only occur using Firefox? What about Internet Explorer?

Hardware acceleration was enabled so I unenabled it as you suggested.

To clarify, it's not just limited to Firefox, though it seems to happen most in Firefox and when I play video (MP4) in Zune Desktop. The last freeze event happened as I was draging and dropping a 100MB avi file from a window to the desktop.

I don't use IE but I do use Chrome and that doesn't seem to cause any problems.

Download Malwarebytes - rename it to "toy.exe" before save it to desktop. Install it, update it and run a full scan. If it returns no infection, do what follows:

Click Start, in the search box, please type msconfig and hit Enter. You will see system configuration utility. On this on the top right hand side corner, please click Tab Startup. Now, at the bottom on the right hand side, please click Disable All .Click Apply and OK. Now, you will see an option, Restart. please click Restart. Then, enable one of them and restart. Keep enabling and restarting until freezes happens.

Also, still if you face the same issue, please restart your computer in safe mode with networking and check if it still hangs or feezes up. Please restart your computer in the "safe mode with networking" as under:

1. Turn off the computer.

2. As soon as you restart the computer, start hitting F8.

3. Now, by using up and down arrow keys on the keyboard, please choose Safe Mode with Networking.

4. Now, hit enter twice.

5. Now, click on your user account.

Let us know the results.

Thanks. I ran the Malwarebytes and it found a dozen or so infections, now cleaned. I shall see how we go from here.

Is Security Essentials not as good as its cracked up to be then?

Update Malwarebytes again. Rerun a full scan, just to be sure your system is clean. :geek:

Is Security Essentials not as good as its cracked up to be then?

Regarding the MSE ... It must be said that there is no security system 100% functional. It behooves us keep us safe. I personally use Avast since I bought my first computer, ie, about ten years. I had no more than five infections. The software has its merits, but we're the best security tool! Keep it in mind!
;)

All in all, if the freezes persist, do what I suggested in my previous post.
Let us know the results.

Everything was OK for a while. Then I tried to play an MP4 video podcast in Zune Desktop and it quickly froze my PC.

I've restarted my PC in safe mode with networking, not sure what I'm looking out for but:

"One Or More Audio service isn't running"
"Windows Security Center Cannot Be Started"
Firefox boots up OK.
Zune won't play any files MP4 , MP3 or connect to my Zune mp3 player:
Untitled-1-4.jpg

Is that normal?
VLC Player plays all video & audio files OK (apart from the lack of audio service I mentioned)

Is there something else I should be doing?

In your post #19, you mentioned freezes when trying to watch mp4 files... you tried to use other programs instead of the Zune? Freezing occurs on them too?

I've restarted my PC in safe mode with networking, not sure what I'm looking out for but:

"One Or More Audio service isn't running" ----------------------------> normal
"Windows Security Center Cannot Be Started" ---------------------> normal
Firefox boots up OK. -------------------------> did it freezes? could you view and load pages without problems?
Zune won't play any files MP4 , MP3 or connect to my Zune mp3 player:
Untitled-1-4.jpg

Is that normal? ----------------------------> normal
VLC Player plays all video & audio files OK (apart from the lack of audio service I mentioned) ----------------------------> normal

Unplug Zune from computer. Open Task Manager - right click on taskbar. Click Services tab > Services - lower right side of the window. In the window that opens, scroll down until you find Zune (...). Right-click on Zune (...)> Properties. Under Startup Type, select "Disabled". Click Apply and OK. Close the Task Manager and reboot. Do not plug Zune. Use the pc normally. Open files. Use Firefox. What happens?

Update:

Thanks again for all your time and input on this issue. I have learnt a whole lot and been introduced to some great new security/cleaning software I didn't know of beforehand.

However I get the strong feeling we are not getting to the route of the problem at all.

Since your last reply I have done the following:

- Backed up my files.
- Ran dban to completely wipe my C drive (dod short 3 passes).
- Re-installed Windows 7 64bit.
- Upon rebooting I still have the same freezing problems...

I have barely started to install software or any of my files and yet almost straight away I am still getting random screen freezing events. I haven't even installed Firefox or Zune yet. I have already run Malwarebytes and I have no infections.

I think I have a hardware issue, my current PC has never been the most stable kit.

As I am essentially starting fresh, I have attached a new set of reports. I expect a few drivers might be out of date and I am still getting OS updates Service Pack 1 etc. but what do you think now?

Let's go:

  1. Unplug all external HDD;
  2. Uninstall Bit Torrent, Radio Downloader;
  3. Run check disk from Winre, you need Windows 7 DVD, boot the computer to Win RE from the elevated command prompt, and try to do a CHKDSK. You can follow these steps to run CHKDSK :

    1) Use the Windows 7 DVD to start the computer in Windows Recovery (WinRE).
    2) In WinRE, open a command prompt. To do this, follow these steps:
On the Install Windows screen, select the appropriate Language to install, Time and
currency format, and Keyboard or input method options, and then click Next.
    3) Click Repair your computer.
    4) Click the Windows 7 installation that you want to repair, and then click Next.
    5) Click Command Prompt.
At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    chkdsk <drive letter>: /f /r

    :note: Disclaimer: :note:
Important: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost.
  4. Attach a new set of reports.

Windows System Health reports your HDD is running fine again. :)
Now
go to Windows Start Orb and type "eventvwr.msc" in search box without quotes and hit enter. Will open a window as shown below.
Left pane > Event Viewer > Custom Views > Administrative events.
Right pane >
Save events in the Custom View as ... > Name it "Event Viewer" and save it as Event Archives ( *.evtx ) as shown below.
Attach it in your next post.
