Looking for VueScan Users

I would like to know how long it takes for VueScan to load on other people' computers. It takes between 15 and 20 seconds for it to load on mine.

This isn't an answer to your question, but you might have answered a question I have had for a while: how to get my Canon scanner to work under Linux Mint. I went to the VueScan web page, and they say that their product will work in Linux, and that they have a driver for my scanner! Got my fingers crossed. This has been one of the few nagging problems I have had with Linux (both Ubuntu and Mint).

My eventual move to Linux is the reason I'm looking into VueScan. So far, it does work (and appears to work well) with both my Canon Canoscan 9000F and my Fujitsu ix500 in Win 7. There is a bit of a learning curve on how to use it.

I've been having a huge learning curve up to this time, with no success. Hopefully this will be a shorter, and successful, learning curve.

In terms of why VueScan takes as long as it does to load, it may be loading all of the scanner drivers. If you could somehow uninstall the ones you don't need, my guess is that that will speed up the initial load time.

I don't think so. I was able to observe the drivers for each of my two scanners being loaded the first time I opened it, both after the first time I installed it and after I installed each of the latest updates. There are no driver installation messages after the initial installation.

Once I sorted out the settings (most of the default ones work just fine), the hardest part for me to remember is to name the scanned file before scanning with VueScan, not after scanning, like I do with my stock scanner software (that is the one that is driving me nuts). I haven't spent a lot of time working with VueScan yet since the software for both of my scanners automatically open up after a scan (unless VueScan is open; I'm sure that is a VueScan design feature to avoid conflict). If I want to use VueScan with a scanner, I have to first turn on the scanner, then open up VueScan. It's the seemingly bass ackwards workflow giving me the most trouble. The GUI in VueScan is a bit less than intuitive but not hard to learn (thank God or I'd be in deep doo doo). Mostly, it's just different from what I've been used to for the past umpteen years (and it's harder to teach an old dog new tricks... woof, woof).



One thing I learned recently is I can have two instances of VueScan running
at the same time: one instance set to one scanner and the other instance set to
the other scanner. I haven't actually tried scanning anything yet while both
scanners and VueScan instances are up and running.

I just tried scanning with one scanner while both scanners were powered up and two instances of VueScan running and it just froze the program. so much for that bright idea. That will definitely be a nuisance since some of my scanning needs require me to frequently switch back and forth between my ADF and flatbed scanners.

I think I may have hit on a reason why it takes so long to load VueScan. I noticed when my internet connection went down while I was experimenting (I can't wait until I get my new computer built so I can buy a gun and use this computer for target practice!), the load time for VueScan increased dramatically. I'm still using the trial version.

I blew away my old TV by shooting it a few times with a shotgun after I got a new TV! That was fun!

I just installed VueScan on my Linux Mint computer. It installed immediately and worked perfectly.

There was no noticeable delay when I started the program. It took just a few seconds to start.
