Losing internet connectivity

I have a HP laptop which I use on a family Talk Talk WiFi network just within the house. My internet connection works fine all day until approximately 16:50 then drops out for the rest of the evening. Other users in the house have no problems. Any ideas please.

Can you boot the machine into Safe Mode with Networking and test connectivity before the predicted drop out period.

To do so please follow this tutorial (OPTION ONE ONLY) - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/69585-safe-mode.html

   Note
Please replace all references of Safe Mode with Safe Mode with Networking. This will help to see if there is any third party application causing issues.

Typically applications will trigger this rather than a network infrastructure issue.

When does connection normally restore?

Josh :)

I presume you mean try the safe mode when I can't access any internet sites. I tried it in safe mode this morning whislt I had access, but don't really know what to do then. In answer to your question it is usually back on the following morning, however the times when I can't access any site vary - yesterday I couldn't from about 3 pm. Please remember it says I'm wirelessly connected but it just won't let me access any sites. I suspect a stepson who's a bit of a geek who's on the same broadband but he uses an Apple and has a couple of gadgets to speed up his connection, one of which is a DHP-301AV -do you think this has any connection. I have to say however my access disapears whether he's here or not.

Please try these two tests and post back with answers to the two questions:

Test 1:
After you lose your connection...
(whenever that might be),
...restart the computer
...enter the safe mode with networking
...and try to surf somewhere.

Test 2:
Restart the computer again...
...let Windows start normally
...and try to surf somewhere.

Question 1:
Can you surf while in the safe mode with networking mode during a time that you cannot surf in the normal Windows mode?

Question 2:
Can you surf while in the normal Windows mode after the restart?

After you answer those questions, Shadowjk can make more suggestions.

Other computers on your network can slow your speed down, but they typically would not bring your surfing to a total halt.

I'm afraid the answer to both questions is No. I couldn't surf any sites in safe mode or when I went back to normal mode. It went off to day at about 3 pm again. I'm replying now with the aid of a Vodaphone dongle pay as you go, which is painfully slow.

My apologies for the extremely late reply...

My prognosis was some sort of malware however it would appear you do not get disconnections using mobile broadband correct? This helps to narrow down the potential cause for us.

Also, are you using wireless? If so can you please follow the last section of this post and post back your results. This can help determine if other wireless networks are causing interference issues with your particular machine. If you can provide information about your NIC(s) then that will be much appreciated

Many Thanks,
Josh :)

May I apologise for the delay in replying. Briefly noted your reply but now can't find all the details. Yes it's wireless that I normally use but bought a network patch lead at the weekend and even that has the same result - can't access any websites from early afternoon until around 9 am the following morning. If I plug in my mobile broadband dongle then I can access sites albeit slowly.

Hmmm... This is most bizarre case...

As just a measure to remove the chance of it being the possible cause can you please change your wireless channel on your router and see if that makes a difference. I may be able to provide some steps if you can give me the make/model of your router. My apologies if it has been mentioned before.

Are you able to test disconnections on a different wireless or wired network? Possibly a friend or relatives? This can help us determine if it may be your particular NIC or machine or a configuration on your network causing the issue.

Did this just start randomly or has it always happened? Do you have any VPN or network like software running?

Many Thanks,
Josh :)

Josh, the router is a Talk Talk C55DF4, on the back it has a power socket, a fibre, an ADSL and 4 x LANS. I have a VPN on the PC for my works site and it started randimly but seems to be getting progressivly worse, ie earlier in the afternoon. I'll try to take it to a friends house to see if it has the same problem there.
Thanks

Kill two birds with one stone.
Create and boot* to Kaspersky's Rescue Disk. It has a browser that you can use with the LAN cable (wired connection) to see if you can surf AFTER you lose connectivity using Windows 7. Then go ahead and scan the computer for infections.

If you can surf using the rescue disk...
...then we should concentrate on your software

If you can not surf using the rescue disk...
...then we should concentrate on your network hardware.

That said, Shadowjk's idea of testing on another network (fiend/relative/coffee house) might be easier.

*You might want to put Kaspersky's Rescue Disk onto USB.

When the VPN runs, you might require a proxy setting to be changed in order to surf. Some companies provide an app to automatically toggle that proxy setting.

Josh, I took my laptop to a friends house yesterday who have a wireless network. However, their son who normally sorts out their IT wasn't at home and they didn't know the logon. So although my laptop could see the WiFi's around there, including a couple of hot spots I couldn't try to see if I could connect to any sites - so gave up and had a drink! However, bringing my laptop back home yesterday it seems to be working fine now - how weird is that?

Hmmm... And you never connected at all, just viewed available wireless networks? I am not entirely sure what has solved this...

Keep monitoring and please report back on any further disconnections then we can investigate further

Josh :)
