Lost Aero Theme, BSOD, No Antivirus in safe mode?

Apologies. As of right now, I was able to uninstall Symantec in safe mode, reboot into normal mode, and install the MSE. I'm currently installing a new display driver (I driver swept my last whilst trying to get to the root of the problems).

So far, no BSODs. So apparently... Symantec was causing some issues?

I certainly do appreciate all the help.

OK and yes.

Let us know if you're able to uninstall Symantec. If required we'll do more troubleshooting.

Nope... everything appears to be as it should.

1. Symantec uninstalled.
2. MSE installed.
3. Graphics drivers updated.
4. Running now in "Normal" mode with no issues detected, and no more BSODs.

Seems as though things have been fully sorted out.

Good to hear that.

Come back to this thread if there are any blue screens again (hopefully there will be none)
If you have other problems related to your computer look for an appropriate section and
start a new thread.

FYI : Symantec is a frequent cause of BSOD on some, but not all, systems.

Alright crew...

Everything had been carrying on without issue all week, although I must admit, I left the computer running rather than shutting it off each night.

Well, last night, the temps were a bit warmer, so I shut her down for the night, and got home this evening and went to fire it up, and I got the...

Windows was unable to start.

I found my Win 7 disc, and popped it in, and booted from the disc. I selected repair, and it asked me to restart. After the restart, same thing... and now I'm running startup repair. This will be the second round with startup repair in this event, and it does take a while, I hear the HDD clicking through, but it doesn't appear successful.

I'm wondering if my HDD is perhaps failing? The new Microsoft Security that I've installed has been run every evening and hasn't come up with anything.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Also, this just in... Startup Repair just returned everything with a "pass" except "System Files Integrity Check and Repair" Failed. Error Code: 0x490. Time Taken = 690359 ms.

Make a hard drive test from the hard drive manufacturers website

Run Disk Check on your hard disk for file system errors and bad sectors on it

Hard drive test both short and long with
→ SeaTools for Windows

kat thanks... right now, it's going through system restore. It actually just finished and says "successful"... if I can get into Windows, I'll check the disk for errors.

Does that even sound like it may be the issue?

No clicking like... the way a hard drive clicks when it's "thinking"... so it seems that it's sorting through data.

Either way, couldn't hurt to check this off the list.

Check disk is running now.

Nearly all my critical files are stored on a series of external drives, so my "C" drive, is really just for windows, and word and such.

I am looking for an excuse to go SSD though?

Stage 4 of this disk check is hanging a lot it seems. Silent HDD, and none of the files counting?

Ok... I finished running disk check (I fell asleep) and didn't notice anything? I know it went through to 100% because I saw that before dozing, and was too tired to bother reading the 3 seconds worth of info they popped up...

Any other thoughts?

Also running SeaTools now. The Short Generic finished with no problems (all passed), so I have the Long Generic running now. I'm assuming it's going to be a while, so I'll check back in later...

Seatools passed everything as well with no issues...

To be clear, I'm not getting BSODs... and the computer seems to be running fine while it's on. If I restart however, it seems 50/50 that Windows will fail to start?

Reseat the ram modules, hdd sata and power cables, clean the dust inside the computer and try.
