i am just having really bad luck with my computer right now...
my windows 7 has deactivated or something and so my microsoft office is not working
sound card not detected // cannot connect to printer

running chkdsk c: (read only) comes up with a bunch of problems
running chkdsk c: /f gives me an error, cannot lock the volume...
running sfc /scannow /r /f dives me the same error

running error checking gives an error
trying to do a windows 7 upgrade (simply replacing the system files) also gives me an error

my next step is to reboot with my windows 7 cd and run their diagnostic but i remember it takes a LONG time and am open to any suggestions THANK YOU :]

Back up your files, Reboot to the Win7 Repair CD or DVD Repair console, click through to Recovery Tools list to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/681-startup-repair.html?ltr=S

If it takes awhile it is most likely the chkdsk which needs to be run anyway since your drive may be failing. Let it run up to a full day. If you need to bail out then move to the next step.

Next run the HD maker's diag/repair full CD scan to repair surface errors: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

You can save a HD and extend its life with the combination of chkdsk and Repair Scan, sometimes in reverse order and sometimes repeating one which failed.

Do you want to be thorough and possibly salvage your HD, or do you want it fast?
