Tons of BSODs and lock ups

Hello all. I've been reading this forum for a little while now, figured I might as well register. I arrived from Neowin, when some guy on here claimed to have the leaked RC... Hahaha.

I installed the Windows 7 RC x64 when it came out. (Clean Install).

I've had nothing but problems so far...

1. iTunes, at no specific time, causes my computer to completely lock up. Song stutters, mouse is unmovable, etc. I have to turn off from the tower.

2. Can't use sleep mode. I think it hibernates instead. Sometimes when I try to recover from "sleep", windows won't load back up. It will just stay on the welcome screen.

3. Random BSOD for no apparent reason. Yesterday, I had a picture open using the built in picture viewer. I had gone away from the computer for a few minutes, and when I returned, my computer was frozen on a BSOD. I had to do a system restore in order for it to load properly.

4. Plugging in external hard drives, cameras, etc. sometimes causes my computer to lock up in the same way iTunes causes it to lock up. A shutdown from the tower is needed to power down.

I don't have internet on it yet since I am at a campus that requires IP registration before access is granted, so I've been using my old XP computer until I get these problems fixed.

I'm using the latest BIOS drivers as far as I know, latest ATI 4870 drivers for win7, and latest Realtek HD audio drivers. I haven't installed many programs yet, so I don't think there's anything conflicting. Problems have been around since I first installed the RC.

5. Don't know if this is a problem, but at Idle, running hardly any processes / startup programs, I'm using 890-1.25gb of ram. Sometimes it randomly decides to only use 690, though. I don't understand... Even safe mode uses 880 or so. Is that normal, these days? I've been using this old computer for years (768mb ram) and just recently (as in 2 weeks) built my own.

Thanks for the help so far. :)

If you just built a new computer, I suspect a RAM failure. Do a memory test.

Hi Melee54,

I seem to be having problems that are very similar to the ones you describe here. Just wondering: did you ever find a solution to these problems?

Thanks!

I did, but it was very situational. Turns out my IDE DVD drive was the cause of the problem. But the constant freezes and power failures caused my HDD to die, so after I replaced the hard drive and got rid of my IDE DVD burner, everything was fine.

Has anyone hear about the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor?
It checks all your hardware and drivers to see if they are compatible to Win7 before you install.
Seems that most of the problems are user problems not checking before they install.

Here is a link to the Microsoft downlaod page. LINK

Hi Melee54, Welcome to SF,

To analysis BSOD issues we need the Dump file. http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lockup-debug-how/34900-1-novice-how-ask-help-bsod-problem.html this should help you to attach it here
