Low score on Hard drive - Possible issue?

Hi guys,

I'm just looking for your input on here, to know what you think about that. My primary hard drive used to be rated 5.9 on the Windows experience index score, but now it seems to have lowered and I do not know why it would have done so. I have not noticed any difference in performance or any issues that could have happened in the past with it. Just wondering if it could mean something wrong might be coming.

This is the specs for this hard drive based on the model number:

Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Here's the index score for the hard drive (well including the rest):

Just let me know your opinion if there are concerns to have with the hard drive or if it doesn't change anything.

The importance of those scores are overblown, the imporance of a good HD is not.
Test your dirve
Test Hard Drive
Hard drive scan usings SeaTools - SeaTools for Windows | Seagate - Both long and short tests
Make sure there are no problems.

Try to close all your applications and Re-run the assessment

It's natural - new hardware ( HDD , CPU etc. ) is coming every day , so from M$ have to reconsider and rebuild the score list every time it happens .

Follow Rich's good advice to check the HDD for errors, and then run a disk defragmentation - it might just help.

Thanks guys, I'll run the tests, and I'll have to agree that this score is overblown to a certain point. Having it change got me to wonder, it's all .

It's overblown, period. Not to a point. What good is a "benchmark" that you can have altered scores just by rerunning a test, or you can manipulate the scores to be whatever you want? My system gets a 9.9 across the board whenever I feel like it.

I believe a 5.9 is the highest any spinner HDD can get, and considering you have a 3 Gbps, that score seems normal.

Yeah, I figured it would still be a normal score seeing as it is an old drive with specs from that time. The change just made me wonder if something was starting to go wrong, but with the seatools it all passed.

Since you passed the HD tests, I believe this to be correct.

They didn't reset anything. Why do you think myself and so many others are shocked by the "show me your WEI scores" threads? You can edit an XML file to show whatever score you want. You could do this since the very early stages of Vista's beta versions....so that's going back...5-6 years or so. There's even a tutorial on it here.

I assumed everyone knew about that by now. If you google "edit my WEI score" you'll find plenty of links, including the tutorial here. That's why worrying about your WEI score doesn't make much sense....or using it as a measurement of your system.

I don't worry or use it as a measurement, it's just the fact that it changed got me to wonder. I already know that you can edit it.

Microsoft has coined a word for folks who aim at a perfect score: "Braggers". These guys are mostly gamers.

The @OP has a valid point,when he says, the WEI changed!

In addition to checking the HD as Rich wisely suggested using the maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan, finish checking over it's condition by running a Disk Check.

Then delete all the junk you may have accumulated, run CCleaner to get the hidden stuff, then a good disk defragger like Puran Defrag Free Edition which offers a boot-time defrag and even Disk Check itself.
