Mac address

I browsed about my router in 192.168.1.1 and when I try to add mac filter and I entered my physical address that I found in cmd(ipconfig/all)..It says invalid address..what should I do?

Hello Bagavan,

You may not have entered the MAC address correctly. You can use the example in step 6 of the tutorial below for what the MAC address looks like in the command prompt and how to enter it for a router's MAC filtering.

ex MAC address: 00:00:00:00:00:00

As suggested Brink, you might have entered the IPv6 adress instead of the mac adress...check again whenever "left click" on your mouse the icon on the taskbar to see your network icon then "right click" to see your mac adress.

Also, depending on your router, some of them don't want you to enter it in "Mac Address format" Meaning, you might just need to erase the colons separating the pairs of numbers.

I used physical address of my wireless adapter..but same error.

What brand and model of router is this for?

You can also double check your router's log files for a MAC address of a computer that had a failed attempt to connect with the same time that you tried to see if it matches any of the MAC addresses of your computer from below.

How did you enter the MAC address, and did you have any other MAC (Physical) address listed in the "IPconfig /all" report? You will have more than one if you have more than one network adapter.

I have 2 adapters (wireless and wired)..I entered physical address of wireless one.

Make sure that you don't enable the mac filter until after you add your mac addresses to the list.

usually a MAC address is in the format 00:00:00:00 with a COLON not a hyphen. Some routers do it for you though
