Yes I am still around, at home I have only dial up connection and that's though our tmobile phone which my wife takes with her most days so I have no internet a lot. Also living in FL have had some major storms the past few days so I haven't been on here as I am watching the weather online. I have been also checking out all the free sites and trying this DAZ studio the free version that's replacing bryce. Also generally learning about the new laptop. I spent all of today going though DVD's of demo software and cleaning up my files (yes deleting mostly). I also ran into issues with running the 64 bit of 7, most likely driver issues and figuring out if I am going back to the factory install or some beta version of 7 32bit. This slow connection drives me nuts!!!! downloading 30+MB drivers on dialup is insane LOL Anyway back driver downloading. Also trying to find out why I have a 2GB kingston ram module and a samsung 1GB module that are not matched in my laptop and wondering if this could cause any issues but that's another thread I guess.

pull the samsung out, too see if you still bsod. trial and error
7 runs ok on 1gig, so 2gigs should work pretty well, until you can replace the stick (if necessary)

Well heres another update. My wife has been sick the past few days and 4 doctors told me I wouldn't catch it, well they were wrong. my wife has meds and I don't so if I keep feeling this way she wants me at the hospital tomorrow since I am not totally healthy to start with and she's concerned about swine flu as in my condition it would be well not good. So I could be at the hospital and if I am sick they will admit me since I have been unable to fight off infections since my surgery. Just pray they don't do any more tests that almost kill me. Anyway. I still have photoshop installed (yes being honest) the local gallery has included me in the B side artist group and when I can get back up there they think they have a copy of PS they can give me so I remain legal and keep doing my artwork.

One piece of software I do need is a good backup program free of course if anyone has any suggestions. I don't know any free apps that really work well. Also I would like a HDD utility that can do stuff like Arconis Disk director does. I want to hide the recovery partition and create a new one for file storage. I know there are some basic tools built into 7 but I don't think resizing a partition with the OS by the OS would be a good idea. if what I said made sense cool. Anyway my meds are working.

Well I am going back to sleep just checking in LOL.

only issue I have so far is some times when I shut down it hangs on the log off screen, no error logs about the issue either. and I wrote to HP to find out why they would put unmatched modules in a laptop no response so far.

for backup I use GFI backup Home edition - have used it for a while without issue. it also has a synchronizing module and built in scheduling, but may also be used with the Windows 7 scheduler

Macrium Reflect is my FREE choice of backup software...
Compact...neat and it just does the job.
Network backups and scheduling obviously are stripped out of the Home Free edition but still well worth it.

The reason I suggested the GFI option is that amazingly for a free product nothing is removed Ive tried a lot of free packages over the years and most seem to be missing one feature or another

For pre upgrade/reinstall OS user info backups I have heard good reports on this ....

Have you ever had to do an actual 'restore' with any of the products?
Any difficulties encountered?

been really sick last few days. I did get a chance to talk to the gallery owner who has the photoshop and he doesn't keep them at the store but he thinks he has at least 2 copies/boxes that didn't get used setting up the printing shop in the back. He is going to locate it for me and set up a deal where 10% of my sales goes to pay for the copy of PS. which is a deal I can live with.

oh talking about free software here is not cross posting to me, its giving me the ideas I need to find the computer tools I want. now that I am part of the gallery and B side artists doing tech work might become secondary to artwork.

Wwoods my system is about 95% legit now. Does running a non registered copy of 7 count as legit or what?

I still have photoshop installed and I guess getting a new none pirated serial lets me slide on that for now?

oh and I still want some partition type tool if anyone knows if anything that works. if not I am going to try and buy Easeus software. I am also waiting for replies about my serial to some small apps I have and really want to keep. I paid for 2 of them years ago and at that time upgrades where free so waiting to see if that still applies to me since my serials still work but the price has gone from very cheap to 50+ so I honestly don't think my serial covers the new copies.

well the doctors are asking me to get offline and rest but I wanted to keep you updated.

well I don't have swine flu!!!! my spleen is troubling them as he put it so I am here for a few more days. I will post the e-mail I get about my old serial numbers when they come in. which should be monday or tuesday and I have tests scheduled for monday so I should be back with an update by Wed I hope.

OK macgyver2, re: the windows7 question...since it has not been released, I assume youre running it via the RC trial and have or are planning on re-arming untill release correct ?

If you could, for me and for the instruction of others, list what you had and what you replaced it with. And, yes I think we are almost there.

You will need to look into what re-arming is, because since Win7 doesnt come out till Oct22, will need a way of keeping it running untill then.
