Hi there,

Put my settings like I usually do... screen saver after 35 minutes, display off after 1 hour and put computer to sleep after 2 hours.

However, when the 2 hours period comes, I hear an almost 'pop' noise from the computer and it leaps back into life and shows the desktop and starts all over again.

Any ideas what's causing this? Thanks.

I had the same problem and I think it was the USB selective suspend setting in Advanced Power options that needed to be disabled to stop it waking instantly after Sleep was activated.

I am pretty sure I read somewhere that hibernate (and sleep) do not work in Win7.
The recommendation was to turn them off and await a fix.:geek:

darkassain, yeah something similar.
Thanks for the link. Interesting comments herein.
One thing that was not mentioned is the fact that the machine will not shutdown. Clicking start>shutdown is useless. Pressing the restart or power button has no effect.
My only solution is to press and hold the power button for a count of ten. Then it shuts. Dead.

I'm having a different, but related issue...

My PC can enter sleep mode and it stays there (blinking power light, all fans off).
But when I try to wake it, it just doesn't wake. The pc turns on, fans start working, but I never get a screen, the monitor stays off. I have to reset it to get back from startup , where it gives me "windows did not shut down correcty" screen and I can start over.

It strange though, it happened lately. I used to put it to sleep and to bring it back on and it worked. On another 2 PCs I have, sleep works fine (1 notebook and 1 desktop). I disabled all the devices that could bring it back from sleep , now it only resumes with the power button. Still the same. Probably a clean install would fix it, but I'd like to trace the cause ...

Any thoughts?

Sony Vaio Laptop won't Shutdown

Hi, I installed the Win 7 Beta last weekend and so far I really like it. I just have a few minor issues.
The main issue is that my Sony Vaio Laptop won't shutdown; restart is no problem, but when I try to turn the computer off the shut down screen just runs and runs. I haven't even gotten around to messing with any of the power settings yet.

The only other aggravating issue is that McAfee won't work with Win 7 yet. I'm using a 14 Day trial of Norton for now, but I would really just like to use a free AV until McAfee delivers a working product. Does anyone have a suggestion? I've heard that Spyware Doctor or Avast might do the trick.

My Specs are:

Turning off USB Selective Suspend worked for me

I had the same problem and I think it was the USB selective suspend setting in Advanced Power options that needed to be disabled to stop it waking instantly after Sleep was activated.

Thanks for this tip, I disabled the USB Selective suspend and I can now shut down my system.

Hi Kayzee,

You might see if the items here can help you find out what is waking your computer back up. It may be your network adapter Power Management options set to allow to wake the computer.

Hello!
I have similar problem, so I won't create another thread.
Everything was OK this morning, but when I try to hibernate my machine now it kind of "pops" out back. The screen goes black for a second and then lights up again showing my desktop. When I reboot machine and try to hibernate it remains black for 10 secs or something; after first try it wakes up almost instantly. Something gets cached?..
Like I said, this mailfunction appeared few hours ago. All I have done today is videodriver installation. The fact is I've already used this system (from the same installation disk) with the same drivers, programs, settings etc. So, I think, the problem is configuration, not the software itself. I have reinstalled my OS few days ago (before that I used it for 2 months) and I encounter such a problem first time.
I have followed your instructions from "How to Troubleshoot a Vista Sleep Mode Problem and Find a Solution" tutorial (thanks, great article), but it didn't help.
Can you advise me something else?
Sorry for such a long text, I just want to describe situation to get my hibernation capability back. I love this mode very much, I'm so upset I can't use it:(

P.S. I had watched through events written to system log after I tried to hibernate. Nothing relevant.
And one more thing: powercfg lastwake command shows me count of 0, like it didn't even began to hibernate...

P.P.S. Sorry for my poor English.
Thanks for spending time to read.

I had a problem similar to this about 1 year ago. Although my OS is still XP it works fine for me. I would put my computer on Standby/Sleep mode every night before i slept. One night when i would press Standby/Sleep it would go in into sleep mode but then around 10 seconds later would wake up. I finally found out that it was my Windows automatic updates that was causing it. Seemed like it would not allow me to activate sleep mode until after i downloaded and/or installed the updates which is what i did. After that it went into Stand-by/sleep mode just fine.

So this is my 1st post on this site, I joined because I am out of ideas and I can not find a solution. The problem is similar but not exact.

When choosing the hibernation option the laptop will start to go what appears to be hibernation, but if I move the mouse or touch a key it pops right back up like it was just in sleep mode.

Any ideas I have been looking on and off for 2 weeks and I am getting sick of looking
