Hi,
trying the free backup program Macrium Reflect 7.2. the incremental backup feature does not run. tried several times and get and error 0x01 message. macrium says it does not support the incremental feature in the free version. checked the event viewer and it shows nothing.
is this something to even worry about or not. the rest of the program seems to run fine.
Thanks.

That is correct. Incrementals are a Premium feature and only available in the paid-for version.

Depending on which free one you installed, you may have had Incrementals on a trial basis. The 30-day trial version includes incrementals, but when the trial expires it becomes the free version without incrementals.

If you installed the free version and attempted to use incrementals it would have offered to become the trial version.

Either way, at the end of a trial you cannot reactivate the trial. It would then just say it's not available in the free version. I'm guessing you have used the trial for more than 30 days and declined the request to buy Macrium when it ended.

Differential backups are available in Free, but if you need Incremental you'll need to purchase Macrium. No need to reinstall, the key will unlock the Premium features in your installed Macrium.

As far as I know the free version should be able to restore from an incremental image, just not make any new incrementals.

incrementaL issue

thanks for the info. i did notice the schedule for the incremental backups were grayed out but it show schedule when it would run. did not notice it was a trial version. i had only had it for a couple of days. i guess that's why the event log did not show anything.
however does one even need this feature going forward? if so i will consider upgrading to paid version.
thanks again.

No, many find the Free version does all they need. Full, Differential and Scheduling are all included in Free.

I have used Free for years, only recently buying it in one or their regular 'special offers' (a Black Friday 50% discount). I bought it more to show support for this company and their excellent and prompt support than any need for the Premium features. It also allows you to register and post on their Forum. Without registration you can read the forum posts but not ask questions.

'Paid for' add Incrementals, which can be smaller than Differentials. It also adds Changed Block Tracking which can speed up a Differential or Incremental backup, and Rapid Delta Restore which speeds up a restore by only restoring difference between the image and what's already on the partition.

None are a 'must have', Free had been doing all I required.

I was just posting my problem when I noticed this thread. I had been using Acronis for many years but recently found it to be for lack of a better way of putting it, unstable or unreliable. I started using the free version of Macrium Reflect along with Acronis and feel it is a better choice. I am considering paying for it to both support the company and be able to get support. However, between my wife and I, we have 3 Windows systems and one Mac. Macrium does not work on Mac.....so to obtain a discount I have to pay fr 4 systems around 100 dollars. I thought about the techie version to put on a thumb drive but it something like 800!

Maybe you can help me with my present restore problem using Macrium...."Problem Restoring Dynamic Disk Data, Non OS Drive."
