I just can't get some of my friends to stop using XP. They're in big harm, but they still think it's faster ande simpler. And some even think that the only major changes in Windows 7 is aero. :[

Wow this is interesting. I still use XP on one computer. My other computers are all Win7. I tend just to change operating systems when I change the computers.

Does anyone besides me find this is freaky?

We've still got till Apr 2014 (not 2013 but 2014) before support ends -- and in computing that's almost a Geological AGE away.

Individuals can change OS'es just like that -- corporates are the one's who need to "Ship Up or Out".

For some things on a VM I can still see myself using XP even long after "Xp Official support" ends. Otherwise I actually on other machines quite like W8 CP.

Don't create "Panic" when none is due. Come May 2014 when support for XP has finally ended -- it wont suddenly stop working -- this isn't the "Millenium Y2K scare" all over again.

That's not really an issue if you go via an ISP and enter a domain name since the ISP will do the necessary conversion automatically. (That's what their DNS servers are for !!).

It's only a problem if you need to enter an actual IP address or you have your own DNS servers.

There is nothing wrong with sticking to Windows Xp or Vista. I still love XP although something is holding me to windows 7. Although there is at some point that you have to give up the old and welcome the new. This is just my two cents.

I always found Windows Vista to be under-rated. It was reasonably fast and had major improvements compared to XP in my opinion. I liked it and it served me well for a few years until I upgraded to Windows 7.

I think one of the reasons it was so unpopular is that the hardware requirements for Vista were so much higher than XP, so lots of XP computers either couldn't run it or ran it very slowly.

Specifically, when I make a clean install of Vista or Win7, after support for WinXP has ended, will I still be able to get service packs and updates for WinXP Mode?

Don't know about xpmode - I expect so as they are ( optionally )part of the later os.

Vista will continue to get security updates till 2017, I believe.

Those of us who like it still have a bit of time to enjoy it.

It will. Microsoft said it themselves. Windows XP Mode is a copy of Windows XP just like any other copy. It will have patches discontiued along with all of the other copies of XP.

Thanks for the info. The Windows XP Mode is very convenient for me. With it I can still make use of an old Epson photo scanner that is still in very good condition.

only patches and updates you can still use it not like your going to be banned from using it. Just it won't be patched any more so it might have security flaws in the future and software devolpers are more likely to stop supporting xp and only make software compatible with win vista,7 and 8

Why on EARTH are they in "Big Harm".

XP works 100% fine -- not everybody out there is logging on to torrents / other dubious sites --- many people use computers for YEARS and YEARS and never get viruses of any sorts.

By all means upgrade when the time is RIGHT FOR YOU.

I'm actually using Windows 8 CP as I type this so I'm not scared at all of upgrading -- however I've got time etc and probably the resources to fix stuff if it all goes pear shaped.

If you are basically just using Office, Email, watching a DVD or two or playing music -- XP will work just as well as any other system. Simple Web surfing is fine as well.

I'll bet that even on these Forums where most people are doing far more with their machines than the general population -- the percentage of people that actually get viruses is still TINY.

Most of the security stuff is usually peddled by people who have a vested interest in "scare mongering" people into costly useless software purchases or unnecessary upgrades.

Golden rule -- and is FAR FAR more effective than ANY security system installed on the computer

1) NEVER open email attachments unless you know who sent it AND YOU TRUST THE SENDER.

2) Don't get suckered in to "Canadian Lottery" or "Nigerian Business man needs to change money" type of scams

3) NEVER EVER pay money up front for dubious services that ask you to pay a percentage to "get the rest of the service" unless it's a well known and trusted brand in your country.

4) Choose your internet sites carefully.

5) Never give out Bank details / login passwords etc via the Internet -- Banks and reputable companies will never ask for these --you can always submit a request for new login details.

6) Finally upgrade when YOU want to --It's YOUR equipment and YOUR money. YOU are in charge here.



And BTW XP has 3 service packs - sp1 / 2 and 3- you can slipstream into the base install system -- and use things like Driverpacks to organise it for you.

Bog standard Windows XP won't recognize SATA disks so unless you slip stream a driver into an install or have very old computers with IDE Disks you'll get a message "Windows is unable to find any Hard Disks".

SP3 XP Final (Can't remember if it requires SP1 or SP2 as a Pre req). It has links to SP1 and SP2 as well.

Thanks for your post. I had just asked about whether or not it is still possible to download service packs for WinXP for later installation. I have Win7 Ultimate and make occassional use of its XP Mode to run an old but still very useful Epson photo scanner.

At the weblink below I have found that in order to install XP SP3 you first have to have SP1 and SP2 installed. Unfortunately the latter is not available from MS; that's how I read it. How do you read it ?

I see both SP's available. Additionally it says you only need one or the other. I'd grab both while you're there, just in case.
