Make bootable iso from student d/l

How to Create a Bootable ISO from a Student Windows 7 Download

If you get the student d/l and have 3 files :

Here's how:

1. Rt click each file, Properties > Unblock>Apply>OK.
NOTE: Make sure read only boxes are clear.

2. Rt click and run as admin on the .exe. You will get a folder called expandedsetup on your dektop with these inside:
EXPANDEDSETUPCONTENTS-2009-10-22_061340.jpg
   Note

If you receive this error:

We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only.

Continue.

3. D/L this zip, extract it and copy/move oscdimg.exe into C:\Windows\system32.
View attachment oscdimg.zip
4. Assuming expandedsetup is on your Desktop:

Vista/7 users open an elevated command prompt ( rt click cmd and run as admin) and type :

Code:
Oscdimg.exe –u2 –b"C:\Users\your_username\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com" –h "C:\Users\your_username\Desktop\expandedSetup" C:\7.iso

XP users commands are:

Code:
cd /d C:\windows\system32

Code:
oscdimg -u2 -b"C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com" -h "C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Desktop\expandedSetup" C:\7.iso

5. You can copy and paste the above into elevated cmd.

Vista/7 users- replace your_username with your actual username.

XP users - replace USER with your actual username

6. Then press enter. Xp users press enter after each of their two commands.

7. If the expandedsetup folder is not on your desktop, replace with appropriate paths.

   Tip
You may wish to copy the expandedsetup folder directly onto the root of C:

The paths will be shorter and the command will be:

Code:
Oscdimg.exe –u2 –bC:\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com –h C:\expandedSetup C:\7.iso

If your folder is elsewhere, to get the paths easily, press shift and rt click on etfsboot.com - select copy as path ( paste into notepad )

Shift and rt click on expanded setup - select copy as path - paste into notepad ) Use those instead of the above.

The spacing needs to be exact.
   Warning
When the .iso is created you will get this message:

WARNING: This image contains UDF file system structures.

That is normal as you are creating the udf filesystem.

8. A) You can burn the .iso to dvd as an image with an isoburner.
View attachment isoburner.zip
OR

B) You can use the Microsoft DVD/USB tool to burn the .iso to dvd or to use the .iso to make a bootable flash drive. Download the tool:
View attachment Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe
   Tip
To make a copy of your Windows 7 ISO file:

1. Click the Start button, and click Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool in the All Programs list to open the USB/DVD Download tool.
2. Click Browse and select the file in the Open dialog box.
3. Select USB to create a copy on a USB flash drive or DVD to create a copy on a DVD disk, then click Next.
4. If you are copying the file to a USB flash drive, select your USB device in the dropdown list and click Begin copying. If you are copying the file up to a DVD, click Begin burning.

There isn't a different one you have to use that for windows.

Did you have a look in Bios and see if the disk controller can be set to ide - anything that avoids ahci - probably is already - worth a look.

Hi wrobster,

You might give this a try:

oscdimg.exe -h -j1 -b"C:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com" -m "C:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\expandedSetup" C:\7.iso

Correct...but Digital River actually has links for 32 bit and 64 bit home and pro. You can request whatever version that you purchased.

Some folks have already guessed the other three links since the name of the ISOs for the other three versions is fairly well known...and even documented in the (hidden) Gizmodo comments. View the story and click the "Show hidden threads" link.

BTW, I downloaded the 64 bit Pro ISO from Digital River and it mounts fine. Of course, the great instructions here already helped me make an ISO from the files that I originally downloaded from DR...so thanks! :)

Everybody really should have an .iso

If you already downloaded the student files - you can make one easily.

Use this tutorial if you are happy with making a command.

OR

Use this if you want a very easy way that takes 5 mins:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/32055-bootable-iso-create-installation-files.html#post333247

OR

You can download the .iso - takes a long time and about 2.5 -3 gb bandwidth:

A few people have had that too. The Microsoft tool is new and not infallible.

Use this and burn at 4x:

When you download the iso make sure you save it. Do not run it-it must be save first. Found this mistake myself:cry:

Make a boot-able DVD from student d/l
[this uses part of user SIW2's post, and notes a step from user Audio's post that worked when I created my Windows 7 boot-able DVDhttp://www.sevenforums.com/member.php?u=29]

If you get the student d/l and have 3 files similar to these:

* Windows 7-HP-Retail-en-us-x64.exe
* setup1.box
* setup2.box

Here's how:
1. Download oscdimg.zip
- Go to this website:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/30470-make-bootable-iso-student-d-l.html
- Complete this step:
3. Download this zip, extract it and copy/move oscdimg.exe into C:\Windows\system32.
oscdimg.zip

2.Move the .exe and two .box files to your desktop
- the files will resemble the following [version of windows 7 doesn't matter]
* Windows 7-HP-Retail-en-us-x64.exe
* setup1.box
* setup2.box

3.Assuming your files are on your Desktop, open an elevated command prompt ( rt click cmd and run as admin) {type: cmd into the start menu "start search" area }
-if your current operating system is windows xp or earlier just go to start->run, then type cmd and hit enter

4. Type or copy then paste {right click on cmd field to paste}
- be sure to copy the user name for your computer in the USERNAME area before you type or paste the information:
oscdimg -bC:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h -u2 -m -lWIN_EN_DVD C:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\expandedSetup\ C:\7.iso

5. Now, download windows 7 usb dve downloading tool
- go here: Microsoft Store: Download Manager Help
- download it under the "Installation" heading step 1

6. Install and run Windows 7 usb dve downloading tool
{this small program makes the bootable dvd from the iso in one easy step}
- the iso was created on the C: drive and is name 7.iso
- this completes the process, boot from your dvd and install windows at your convience
-- don't forget to copy your installation product key to a piece of paper or something

Hi wrobster,

You might give this a try:

oscdimg.exe -h -j1 -b"C:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com" -m "C:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\expandedSetup" C:\7.iso

I tried this but used the bootloader boot.bin from vLite instead.
No luck - this time the BIOS said "boot record not found"

Hi wrobster,

Sorry, you have to use etfsboot.com.

The -j1 in the above command may do the trick - but you must use etfsboot.com.

I would do this:

1. D/l the free Macrium Reflect on your son's machine. Run off the Macrium boot cd ( Select the Linux option ) - boot the cd and check it works on his machine.

Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

Macrium Reflect - Blogs and News

Macrium Reflect - Blogs and News

Macrium Reflect - Blogs and News

2. Make an image of his drive - use Normal compression and High Priority ( Macrium is Very fast). Store the image on an external HD.

3. Make a small ntfs partition on his drive ( on the extreme right) . Don't use XP Disk Management - use this - again small, fast and free:

Free Download Partition Wizard

4. Boot his machine as normal into ( I assume XP).

Put the 7 dvd in the drive.

Rt click the dvdrive and copy the contents to the new partition you made.

Install 7 by running setup from there. ( You need to have the partition you want to install 7 onto already - you don't get advanced partition options when installing by running setup like that).

5. When 7 is installed, updated and Activated - make an Image and store that on the external drive as well.

If he needs to reinstall 7 in future - put that image back on instead.

6. Good idea for him to make a new image periodically, so it is up to date.
