Make bootable iso from student d/l

How to Create a Bootable ISO from a Student Windows 7 Download

If you get the student d/l and have 3 files :

Here's how:

1. Rt click each file, Properties > Unblock>Apply>OK.
NOTE: Make sure read only boxes are clear.

2. Rt click and run as admin on the .exe. You will get a folder called expandedsetup on your dektop with these inside:
EXPANDEDSETUPCONTENTS-2009-10-22_061340.jpg
   Note

If you receive this error:

We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only.

Continue.

3. D/L this zip, extract it and copy/move oscdimg.exe into C:\Windows\system32.
View attachment oscdimg.zip
4. Assuming expandedsetup is on your Desktop:

Vista/7 users open an elevated command prompt ( rt click cmd and run as admin) and type :

Code:
Oscdimg.exe –u2 –b"C:\Users\your_username\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com" –h "C:\Users\your_username\Desktop\expandedSetup" C:\7.iso

XP users commands are:

Code:
cd /d C:\windows\system32

Code:
oscdimg -u2 -b"C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com" -h "C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Desktop\expandedSetup" C:\7.iso

5. You can copy and paste the above into elevated cmd.

Vista/7 users- replace your_username with your actual username.

XP users - replace USER with your actual username

6. Then press enter. Xp users press enter after each of their two commands.

7. If the expandedsetup folder is not on your desktop, replace with appropriate paths.

   Tip
You may wish to copy the expandedsetup folder directly onto the root of C:

The paths will be shorter and the command will be:

Code:
Oscdimg.exe –u2 –bC:\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com –h C:\expandedSetup C:\7.iso

If your folder is elsewhere, to get the paths easily, press shift and rt click on etfsboot.com - select copy as path ( paste into notepad )

Shift and rt click on expanded setup - select copy as path - paste into notepad ) Use those instead of the above.

The spacing needs to be exact.
   Warning
When the .iso is created you will get this message:

WARNING: This image contains UDF file system structures.

That is normal as you are creating the udf filesystem.

8. A) You can burn the .iso to dvd as an image with an isoburner.
View attachment isoburner.zip
OR

B) You can use the Microsoft DVD/USB tool to burn the .iso to dvd or to use the .iso to make a bootable flash drive. Download the tool:
View attachment Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe
   Tip
To make a copy of your Windows 7 ISO file:

1. Click the Start button, and click Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool in the All Programs list to open the USB/DVD Download tool.
2. Click Browse and select the file in the Open dialog box.
3. Select USB to create a copy on a USB flash drive or DVD to create a copy on a DVD disk, then click Next.
4. If you are copying the file to a USB flash drive, select your USB device in the dropdown list and click Begin copying. If you are copying the file up to a DVD, click Begin burning.

Hi Zi,

We've had nearly 100,000 views - so a few having difficulty is no surprise.

Also - now shadow and the others know a litle about how to use cmd.

vlite is easy for this of course - I already did a screenshot run thru for that.

I have spent much of the past 24 hours trying to get this thing to work, including about 5 hours with two separate Microsoft tech support guys in India (useless!).

The initial download worked: I got the three files (the two setup boxes and the Win7...64 unloader. I have run the the unloader countless times on three different WinXP machines, but each time I get the "We are unable to create or save new files..." error. This happens irrespective of whether the files are on the desktop or in another folder. When I check the properties, the folder invariably comes up with the read-only check box solid green. I uncheck it and close the properties dialog, but when I reopen it, the darn check box is green again!

Now I know the first step in this tutorial says I should "unblock" each file before running the unloader, but this option does not show up when I bring up the properties. I assume "unblocking" is something specific to Vista. Right?

So anyway, I do get the setup folder created (despite the error), but when I dblclk the setup.exe I am told that it can't run because it is a 64-bit program and I'm in 32-bit WinXP. OK, no need to panic, right? After all, that is why this tutorial has been created.

I downloaded the oscdimg.exe and put it in C:\Windows\system32. I moved the expandedSetup folder into the root directory (C), fired up cmd, CD\ to have the prompt at C: and pasted in the following string

bC:\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h -u2 -m -lWIN_EN_DVD C:\expandedSetup C:\Windows7.iso

Upon hitting ENTER, DOS tells me that The file name, directory name, or Volume label syntax is incorrect.

Now what?!

I know $30 is not much, but wasting all this time on something that should have taken no more than an hour is unforgivable!

I am in the same boat as this guy. The unload step seems to have problems. I hope some one can figure this out soon

Success! Thanks, SIW!!!

I got Win 7 Pro 64-bt running on my Latitude D620, even though the MSFT tech from India told me it would not work. I guess he was giving up after 3 hours on the phone with me (what morons they have there, unbelievable!) and this was the way of getting me off his back (claiming all my problems were due to getting the wrong version).

Now I have an interesting question. When prompted for the key, I did not enter it and clicked next. The installation continued and everything seems to be working just fine, with no sign of a nag message telling me I have so many days to activate. I checked in the Windows toolbar and there is no activation icon anywhere. Does this mean I'm good to go, i.e. can I install on another computer without running into activation problems?

You're welcome,

As long as you do not enter your key - you have a 30 day trial period.

You can use your key either on that machine, or another machine. Not on both.

The actual dvd can be used on an infinite number of machines - if no key is entered they will run for the trial period. If you enter a different valid key on each those machines they will activate fine.

It is possible to extend the trial period to a maximum of 120 days. After that - you would need to reinstall to get another 30 days, etc.

So yes i do have the original install but clearly my win32 directory will be different now, i asssuemd making a boot iso would be different at this point.

Followed the instructions, made the ISO, burned it, and still was unable to upgrade a Win Vista machine due to the error. I had to do a clean install to get the ISO to work. Why am I getting this files are not accessible error when I try upgrading?

SIW2, many thanks for your very clear post on how to get this wee problem sorted. I followed the instructions as per your post http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/30470-make-bootable-iso-student-d-l.html

Everything worked as you said. I went the "You may wish to copy the expandedsetup folder directly onto the root of C:" route and this saved a little bit of typing.

Once the .iso file was generated, I followed he instructions on http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2432-usb-windows-7-installation-key-drive-create.html as the laptop I'm working on does not have a DVD burner.

Cheers, and have a brill weekend,

I need some help. I can across the same situation as everyone else but before I went through all these steps, a friend of mine suggested just using his Win 7 64bit Ultimate dvd, and just put my code in when it asks for it. Seemed like a plausible idea so I went along. Turns out the CD key and SKU for each retail copy are connected.

So I now currently have a fresh install of Win 7 on my harddrive, but no way to do anything with it as I have no working password.

My question is, can I redownload on another computer, and burn those files (the expandedfolder files, the 3.01gigs) as an ISO onto a disk and again make it boot from my custom made ISO disk? I will be skipping step 2, as I no longer have access to any system/32 folders, and I am not sure if that is required for this to work. Any insight will be appreciated.

Hi Trends,

1. You could d/l the student install files and make the iso like everyone else.

OR

You can copy the contents of your friends dvd to your desktop - remove the ei.cfg file from the "sources" folder.

The use exactly the same steps to create the iso from those files- rather than the student d/l files.

You will the have an iso which can be used to install ANY Edition of 7.

Awesome! I will just re-download and make the ISO like everyone else. I don't have access to my desktop as it needs me to enter a CD key to get through that. I was just not sure if my ISO/install would work if I didn't add the ocesm into my system files before I tried this.

You have to use oscdimg.exe.

You can put it just about anywhere - you just need to be in that directory to run it.

That means , in the command prompt, the bit before the> should be the place you put oscdimg.

For example , if you put oscdimg directly on C drive - not in any folder at all, the cmd window needs to start at C:\>

To change directory, open elevated command, type:

cd /d the directory you want.

Not sure what you mean by don't have acces to your desktop - how are you making these posts now?

You can do it all on another machine if you like - when you have made the .iso and burned it - you boot that dvd on your original machine and install.

I'm posting from my work machine. I am locked out of my machine as I installed windows 7 using a friends CD, but my key does not work on it (dumb, I know) and cannot get passed the screen in which it asks for a key.

Ok, I understand now. I was not sure what oscdimg.exe did, and thought for it to work, it needed to be in the system files of the machine that is being updated. I will use it on my other machine and post later tonight if everything worked.

Again, SIW2, we all thank you for your support and patience.
