Make Windows 7 remember window positions and size!

I have a solution which works for my intractable remember windows position.
Set your window as you like it (works for full screen on a dual monitor set-up too) -
Hit F11 TWICE (i.e once for kiosk, once to bring the window back to where you like it).

I've had to purchase this software also its very annyoing Win7 dosn't have this as standard. I've come straight from XP as I was never happy with Vista I don't even remember Win95 having this issue?

However with the Window Manager its messing up any preset sized Java script popups I have on my site ie a shoutbox/radio player Java irc chat etc.

Hope this gets resolved as besides this & portable apps not running i'm very happy with Win7.

I need folders to also remember their LAYOUT settings

The $10 WindowManager solves the window position and size problem, but for me that's only half of what I need. I need each folder to also remember its LAYOUT settings, specifically, whether or not the navigation pane is enabled (Organize --> Layout --> Navigation Pane). Folders remembered all their settings in XP (once the "BagMRU size" registry tweak was applied, that is!!). I need the same behavior in Win7.

The reason is that I use a half-dozen folders on the desktop to store program icons. For example, I have a folder named "Games" that contains icons to run about 50 different games (Yes, I know this harks back to Program Manager in Windows 3.1 -- I've been using Windows since 1982!). I want the Games folder to contain nothing but icons in just the Details pane. But whenever I run Windows Explorer with the navigation pane turned on, it also gets turned on in the Games folder.

Cool thx for this thread.. W7 not saving window positions was driving me crazy!

If W7 is supposed to be the OS that MS is banking on businesses to flock to (unlike vista), how the hell could they screw up like this and break something so fundamental like desktop management. Nobody likes random-poorly-thoughtout change, esp 9-5 business types just slogging through their work.

N1 MS!

Excuse me but have you tried to clear the windows size cache?
I have a .reg that manually resets all windows sizes(using it every month)
so it can remember it again...
This happens also with vista(starts to corrupt the registry)...

P.S. This is the preferred method because you don't have to use a template...

Just say ill upload the .reg (for windows 7 x64)

That doesn't fix the problem all that did was reset all my icon positions on my desktop over to the left hand side  and reset the folder size to default, it still doesn't allow you to have windows remember their individual size and position setting which is what everyone wants and what Vista and XP were able to do.

You need to re-position your windows and close them(allowing windows to remember them)
Works for me every time...
Windows saves your custom setting only when you close the window...
And if you need to make a template you need 2 do it in the Control panel or my computer's folder view...

That's not really the problem.. a good repeatable example:

WinKey + E to open explorer

now open recycle bin

Resize/locate each window to your preference

Close Explorer window, then close recycle bin window

WinKey + E again to reopen explorer window - your Explorer will now reopen in the same settings as your recycle bin window, completely ignoring what you previously set for Explorer - and completely breaking how Windows has always worked in the past (regardless of the bagmru thing).

That's the problem that is new w/ W7 and is fixed with the Desksoft program.

Yes i like that effect!
i dont have to resize about 20k of windows(size's) but the position is changeable only you think it isn't remembering -it actually stacks up windows one after another...

The new "way" is terrible. A folder with 10 objects in it cannot be the same size, or treated the same way, as a folder with 400 objects in it. This is not practical.

One bug I found with this new way, is that if the thing I want to click is on the right size of the window, near the edge, and I double-click it, *but* another item in that same column goes beyond the edge, my selected item will not open, and instead the entire window will "pan" across one screen. This is *utterly* confusing, and practically forces me to resize and move windows constantly.

A collateral victim of the new way is the Control Panel. Every Control Panel window opens in the same size, and all of the panels are of course filled with different amounts of info, so they all require different sized windows. So lots of Control Panel windows now open with scroll bars concealing information, for no reason.

I have a 1920x1200 display. In fact every machine I own has a 1920x1200 display. I don't mind having a few folders open on my desktop. I have the space, I can handle it. I don't need everything in one little window, and I don't want one GIANT window for Computer with all kinds of white space. I don't need to dedicate 75% of my desktop to a folder with three things in it.

Yes i have the 1680x1050 and the solution to your problem is:make the window's bigger (bigger monitor=bigger window's)

I size the CP so it can show all items and i have no problem with other sub-windows(because the CP home is big enough)
The same goes to the Explorer...
Everyone has their way of managing window's and for me(at least) Windows 7 way is much better-because i don't need to enlarge a lot of windows -it does it automatically!
You will get use to it...;)
