Make Windows 7 remember window positions and size!

So does the Adobe Design Suite somehow become more aesthetically pleasing on a Mac? I spend hours using Photoshop and InDesign on my PeeCee and I am happy with the experience.

This would definitely be a pain in the ass, but has anybody considered using a macro program (often free) to create shortcuts for positioning and sizing certain folders upon opening? We shouldn't have to do it, but it still might work for now (or forever if M$ never listens).

It goes beyond visual appeal, really. CS4 interfaces directly with my Mac Pro's fragrance diffusers to fill the room with the effervescent scent of pine, with just a hint of cranberry, every time I add a new layer. There's also a fascinating ambient light show that takes place when I do masking...

Anyway, obviously I'm speaking in regards to apps that simply have no counterpart cross platform. some examples would be apps like Coda, Espresso, CSSEdit, Things, Transmit and so on. These are apps where designers actually have a part in the development process. Is it overkill? If you don't appreciate aesthetics, then absolutely. But in the few times I've tried switching to Windows (twice now in as many years), I really find myself missing the level of polish that goes into the Mac platform.

I kind of agree that 'solved' is misleading in this case. Perhaps the first post should be modded in red text that says 'this cannot currently be done '

I think I found a fix for this .. if you shut your window down using it's own menu instead of the red X .. it should work!

For instance, in Thunderbird, make your window the size you want .. shut down using File >> Exit in the menu , next time you open it remembers that size.

The menu bar is not always visible in IE , but if you enable it and use it as above , it seems to remember the previous size OK.

Not sure about other windows .. but worth experimenting with I'd say!

That does not work either.

The old tricks about opening 3 windows or using the menu to close are nothing to do with this.

Again any window can be resized and closed and it will remember that size but it will not let you have any other window (apart from IE) a different size.

Don't worry people, I bet windows 8 is going to be a windows 7 with a new task bar and these options enabled again.
First they made vista with too many new options and slow now they made windows 7 with too few settings and faster. Windows 8 might just get it right like xp did...
The way I see it, vista is ME 2 and windows 7 is windows 2000(2), so if I'm right xp2 should follow up in the form of windows 8...

Vista was remade at last minute and launched far too soon as Longhorn was 2 years late.

Vista today is a good OS and it has 2 less services by default running on a clean install than Windows 7 has.

I was given Vista freely by MS and even then i avoided it for 1 year till software/driver matured and peeps here had many fixes for issues MS couldn't/wouldn't fix.

That seems...to movie-ish and silly as a modern OS

I wouldn't care honestly if they stuck with the 7 and AERO concept with making noticeable improvements in the future...

I tell you, I couldn't stand this issue with both Vista and now Windows 7. The only way I got around it when Vista came out?

I use this program: Actual Window Manager. Granted, it cost me $40.00 at the time I bought it, but it was the ONLY app that worked for x64 Windows. And it works perfectly. Whatever window rule I set works, whether it be by window type, title, string, whatever. I get all my windows positioned and sized EXACTLY how I want it, and it hasn't failed me once.

The program is a bit overkill, so I just disable all the extra stuff except the window management part.

And I still can figure out how to have either of these do what I want.
Like opening My Computer, going into a drive and any folder, resisze and move the folder and close it. When I open My Computer, it is the size and position of that folder I just resized.
In Vista or XP if I did that, My Computer would be the size and postiton of the last closed My Computer window.
I emailed the author of Window Manager yesterday asking how to do this. No reply yet.

Well Desksoft support never replied, but I guess that email I sent got them to fix it in 1.3

Fix: window position now not overwritten if window caption changes

So now I am happy. I can open My Computer, go in a drive, resize the window, close it, then when I open My Computer again, the size is not lost. Just like the previous behavior in Windows.

It has nothing to do with template or contents so no above will not fix it.

Your on Windows 7 so you have the same issue as everyone else as MS removed the most basic function thats as old as Windows.

Vista does unlike Windows 7 have the function just that MS make a boob and left useless XP code in Vista that sat doing nothing.

The fix for Vista was found by another site like this one and its now also here in the Vista Tuts.

Windows 7 however so far cannot be made to do the same.

The transparency features and options are nice - but if it won't remember the position and size, it is of little use.

You should be able to select the Window, pull down the menu, open the control panel and select remember size and position when closed. As simple as that. If you have to enter pixel sizes and coordinates for every window and folder - it's just not worth it.

How STUPID was Microsoft for leaving the "windows" function out of Windows 7?

Send and email to [email protected] telling them we want the feature back along with a "classic" simple menu.

I got that software to work and it was months ago and nowhere near the current build now.

It was only the trial of windowmanager but if I liked Win7 I would pay for it but some other things need fixed before I will use it fully.

I tested WindowsManager out and found it to NOT work all the time.
Now I am using ZMover and so far it has been 100%. Free 30 day trial.

Windows Manager does not seem to work with Windows 7 - even the beta fails. ZMover seems to work fine and is a lot easier to use. However, we still should not have to use a third party utility to do basic "windows" functions such as this. Please complain to: [email protected]

That works fine with Win7. Always has.
