Is it possible to make a service for wordpad.exe?

In cmd, I typ the following sentence:

sc create servicewordpad binpath= "C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accesoires\wordpad.exe"

--> I get the message the service is created.
In the registry en in computer management, I also see the service

When I want to start the service,
I get an error:

error 1053: the service did not respond to start or control request in a timely fashion period

Can somebody help me?

Thanks in advance!!!!!!

cvdh, no. A service is a service, it is an exe but it is compiled as a service.

If you want to start wordpad at startup, make a link to StartUp folder in your Start Menu.

Uhh...the "Startup" folder in the start menu is for that.

Isn't any executable file a possible service?

Services are specifically written to be a service.
Random executables are not written to be a service.

Are the programs included in a service pack services that I can start with sc?
Or do I need to create them with sc to add them to my registry?

Or why do you need "sc create..." for??

If you go to your control panel and look at the admin options then Computer Management you can see a list of installed services. shows if they are running or not and even has a description for most of them if you click on them.

Services are basically programs that run without a UI. They control things like user login, security, and other lower level functions. Some programs like firewall or AV programs come with a service that runs all the time, and also an optional UI that you can launch to talk to it.

Be careful though, disabling random services here can disable your machine, some will cause immediate shutdown of windows and even on reboot you may be missing vital functionality until you figure out what service you need to turn back on...

The sc command is mainly for admins to control services, turn them on and off etc. Basically everything you can do from the control panel but at the command line so it can be scripted or to control a computer through telnet remotely where you have no UI access to it etc.

And yeah, a service has to be written to be a service. It has a standard set of functions that windows calls to control it and normal programs don;t have those functions. I don;t know of any stand alone DL services you can play with, there may be some but ussualy they come as part of another software package (An AV package for example).

[Edit] Woah, lot of additional posts while I was editing... Are you a programmer? Yes you can make a service fairly easy if you have the development tools... (FliGi7s post has sample code) [/edit]
