I have acquired a new computer and it came with Win7 (moving up from my old computer on WinXP). I'm still trying to learn and master some of the features. One area I need advice on - I have a number of programs that appears to launch on start-up and I need to know where to look to turn that off. I looked in the programs Options areas, but do not see anything. In WinXP, in the "RUN" command box, you had the MSCONFIG and Services.msc programs that you could review all start-up programs. Where is that same capability in Win7?

Thanks

While it may not be exactly what you're looking for, CCleaner has an excellent layout for handling startup programs etc. It's also a very handy and easy to use maintenance tool. The official website is CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download and it has a free version which has no trial restrictions.

It also makes it easier to change the startup properties of various programs by taking you to the precise entry in your registry. This can be useful for making some programs start minimized etc.

This should help. Start and type in msconfig. Go to Start Up. Everything that is checked is starting on boot. Because of various systems I recommend only having your security, mouse, keyboard checked. When you go the Services always go to the lower left corner and put a check mark in Hide All Microsoft Services. What you get then is 3rd party services. I recommend only having security programs checked if any are there. Remember you are not disabling these things. You are telling them not to start on boot and run in the background. They will work normal after you boot your computer and tick on them. They work when you or Windows 7 tells them to.

I'm sorry, IanDrexP, but maybe my question was not clear. I want to go in (as with Run command in WinXP) and be able to uncheck certain startup programs. Can I access MSCONFIG and Services.msc in Win7 as I was able to do in WinXP?
Thanks

If you really want to use run command just use the windows key+r on the keyboard.
Or you could put it into the start menu.

Did you even try msconfig in W7 ? It`s always been there.

Tuneup Utilities does it, and as mentioned Ccleaner does it.

Another thing I do because a lot of auto updates are turned off and I might forget to check for updates. This little program works well for me. I use a icon on the Desktop at least once a day.
FileHippo.com Update Checker - FileHippo.com
Quick and easy to use and you get to pick what you want. It's a on demand program.
