Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet - ONBOARD Asus P6X58D P

Hey guys!

I'd like to thank you first for all the help with my other problems with this piece of crap computer. But now I want to solve, or at least find out why this problems occur.

So I have a Asus P6X58D Premium motherboard which I guess has a "Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet" product as their on board network card.

That's at least what the drivers says on their website and the information on the connection in the connections window in the control panel, thingy.

The problem is that both, because I have two of them on the backside, tend to f*ck up a lot. I don't want to be rude, but having had this problem for a year and searching like crazy on the internet during that time and found nothing, that's what I can express at the moment.

So they disconnect a lot. Usually when I boot my computer I have to fiddle with it. It says "no cable is connected" but it clearly is, so I just repair the connection and it works. By repair I deactivate and activate it again afterwards. Sometimes this won't work though. So I might have to switch the cable over to the other one, and if I'm lucky it will connect. There is a chance that it won't and that's when the annoying part comes. I have to sit under my desk for 10-15 minutes and unplug and replug the damn cable until I see some lights indicating that it is connecting.

Both connections are active during this process but I turn the idle one off after getting a connection. This I have to do almost each time after rebooting.

Sometimes the computer is happy and it doesn't happen, and if it doesn't happen it will not happen again until I disconnect the cable again. Like, if I have to move the computer or something. Then it all starts over.

What I've tried to fix this is:

Installed newest drivers
Drivers from CD
Different OS's, including Win XP and Win 7 32 bit and Win Vista both 32 & 64 bit. Current one is Win 7 64 bit
Googling for others with the same problem, but it's hard because it's so many people having different issues with this component on other boards, or externals, I don't know as I stop reading when I see it's not in my area.

Anything that could stop this I'm willing to try, as long as it doesn't cause any harm to somebody. I wouldn't do a voodoo ritual or something... hehe

Anyways, that's all the info I can give. Asus won't help me either, they don't believe me as it works fine for a couple of weeks after install (most of the time) and then the more you use the computer the more often it happens.

OH I forgot to write that I have tried different ones.. sorry.

My bad. I've actually tried 3 or 4 different ones. They all seem to work great on other computers.

So you only have one adapter at a time enabled and yet both adapters are experiencing the same type of failure am I right?

Yes. They are identical and they behave identical. If it fails on bootup I enable both, fiddle til one works, disables the other.

Hmm, sorry to hear it. I've had the same board and CPU as you when I built my system, and never have had any of those problems with that same network adapter. I only use one so far, so I go ahead and disable the second connection in the BIOS.

Might try different drivers for it and see if it helps any. I get the drivers for it here - Marvell - Support

Or uninstall the latest driver and see if the older driver from Windows Update (run WU) might work out.

Not really any help I know, but just stating does sound like something isn't good there. Bad connections, cables, adapter on board just bad, etc.

Hello Simon,

I have the exact same motherboard and network adapter and haven't had any issues like that with it either.

Installing the latest drivers from the link that Aaron (Airbot) posted above may help. At the link select "Windows 7 x64 (64-bit)" in the "Choose a platform" drop down menu for the 11.43.1.3 version.

Have you already investigated to see if it may be the modem that lost connection, or if it was your ISPs DNS server by temporarily switching to Google Public DNS to see if you have connection afterwards?

I've been installing a bunch of different drivers throughout the whole year.
This is a replacement motherboard by the way. The other was broken in some way, can't remember which, but the new one had this problem with the network.

And to the other guy I can't remember his name and I can't seem to quote you from here but it's not my modem. It's my computer that says he can't find the cable that is connected from my computer to the switch, that is then connected to the router, and router to modem.

All other computers on the network run fine. We used to have like 5 computers. Two stationary and three laptops at times.

Now when I booted up today this was the first time since I installed windows 3 weeks ago that I didn't have to fiddle with it. If I'm lucky this will work until I move my computer, but it's not garuanteed.

I've tried everything. I've tried telling ASUS something isn't right here but they just ignore me because they can't find the issue. They said they installed windows, drivers and all and just stress tested it last time. Which doesn't even make sense. I mean, I reported the LAN not working. Not the CPU?

I'm just fed up with corporations. I doubt I'll ever support ASUS again with their lousy support they offer to swedish people.

To sum it up: tried everything inlcuding drivers, cables, different ports on the switch, different OS's, nothing.

I think I have those drivers already, those that you linked btw. From Marvell itself.

And last but not least, I can't RMA it because they ignore me. I'm thinking of recording a video with my camera showing how it behaves to see if they have any comments. Would this be a good idea? With my Canon EOS 550D that is, so it's not on screen, I'll film my fiddling with the cable as well to make it work. I'll show the whole procedure I have to do to make it work.

SimonWithTheHat-I have felt your pain. You aren't mad as I have experienced the same issues with both lans dropping out, more noticeable when uploading data or files, nevertheless it even occurred with no data traffic.

I put in a new hard drive (different brand) with a clean OS install and the only other program installed was outlook. I even disable all fire walls, Windows and the routers and the problem still existed. I reset bios settings to many conceivable settings, even tried different router, (even though I thought my wired router was not an issue considering two of my other PC's were also using it.) you name it I did it, even swapping out the ram and GPU. I installed a Belkin PCI Ethernet card so that I could at least use the machine, no problem with the Belkin. Eventually I sent it back for an RMA evaluation and they stated nothing was wrong with it? Cutting a long story short they just tested it for a short period of time. Eventually after disputes and many, many wasted hours and 6 weeks later I was finally issued with a replacement board from Asus. This board was not new and it had the same issue and a dead PCiex slot as an added bonus. They gave me a defective second hand board?

I have subsequently had the replacement board replaced, and now no problems, so far. I only received action when I constantly kept emailing Asus TW, Asus Australia and my PC parts supplier.

I copied my event logs of which contain "Port A is down" Event 83 and "Port A is up" with 100 Mbps Event 121 of which shows the port is up and operating. No matter what drivers I tried the problem presented itself time and time again. To also help me with my case, I did screen captures, a small video showing LAN connection lights dropping from the rear of the PC.

SAME OLD Issue

I found this thread and I have the exact same issue. I've been having the exact same issue for some time. I've got the same Motherboard, and same Yukon NIC cards. I've tried new cables, new drivers, Window's Fix It's, I've ran everything from Hiren's I could think of to resolve the issue, removed the drivers and devices, updated the drivers, tried to run the machine off of a wireless even and got the same results. The weird thing is when I drop the internet connection it's not "fully" dropped. I can still use things like Yahoo chat or mine bitcoins (dos) so the connection is still there. I've disabled the IPv6 protocal and uninstalled file sharing for Microsoft. I still am able to get online for a few minutes and then my browser will stop responding. I've tried I.E., Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Safari actually worked longer and better than the others but is now having the same issue. If anyone came up with a resolution to this initial problem years ago, I'd be grateful for any advise. Thanks!

Oh, I've also replaced my RJ45 cables, set the modem connection up several different ways, running it directly to the modem, running to the router, it makes no difference. The other thing is, just like previous posts - all my other systems work fine. I've got 2 macs that stay connected without issue and 2 other PCs that stay connected as well.

The Nic on this board is not the best although are used on many other mobo's with success. I had two boards replaced under warranty. The first replacement (refurbished?) board worked flawlessly for several weeks and then the connection started dropping out again; both nics. This board had a later bios. I again received another board to replace it, it was a new board again with a later bios version, and the problem reared its ugly head again.

I like you have tried new drivers, old drivers, disabling IP V6, new cat leads, so on and so on and so on. The problem not solved but discovered, it was a combination of a couple of things, possibly several. Basically my Nics and modem had some form of compatibility issue. It was not the Windows 7 OS software as I did a fresh install on a new HD with no other programs installed and did not allow it update, it did it immediately. The machine was basically as it was from day one when it ran without issue.

I then borrowed several modems from work, wireless and hard wired and discovered that the problem presented itself with only "one" out of the four (I think?) modems, it was an old modem also. I also tested my PC with a $10.00 Belkin F5D5000 v2000 Desktop PCI Card installed, it had no problems at all with any modem at any speed? I got the on board Nics to work at a compromised speed and this was achieved by setting the "Speed & Duplex - to, 10 Mbps Full Duplex" it now never drops out. I could just upgrade my modem or use the cheapie Belkin if I require faster speeds although due to my location 10 Mbps is greater in speed than what I can achieve in my area anyway at present.

So it maybe a matter of obtaining a new modem or cheap Nic, whichever suits? Borrow a couple of modems or take your PC to a friends place and test it with theirs.

I have three machines and this is the only one that has issues with negotiating via the old Billion modem.

You can see in my earlier post that I used the Belkin Nic and it worked - my on board nics work when I use different modems without issue. - Hardware compatibility?

I've tried other nic cards as well as wireless ones (Cisco, net gear) and while the Cisco worked for about 15 minutes I got the same results. I've got a 50MBps download right now so I'd prefer not to drop it down to 10 if I don't have to but I'll for sure try that. I thought maybe by bridging the 2 connections I might get some results as well but nope, I get the same issue. Now, I can't even disable one or the other and re-enable the other to get connection. I used to be able to do that and would get a connection again for about 2 min but now I have to completely shut the system down to connect for 2 minutes. I've got about 20 nic cards lying around, I guess I can give a couple more a shot and see what happens. What a pain!

I know your frustration and I'm probably not going to be any assistance to you. Other than the cheap Belkin nic card all the other cards that worked were circa 2011/2012.

I forgot to mention, I did have the same issue with a work supplied IBM Lenovo laptop with an on boad nic from a different supplier. This almost confirmed, to me, my problem was related to modem compatibility and both of these machines were operating Windows 7.

I'll go and fie up one of my XP machines and run it through the same old Billion modem to see if the problem presents it self; the old XP machine worked without issue when I last tested it via the old Billion modem.

Just checked the old XP machine (88E8053 Nic) via the same modem with the nic speed set at 100Mbps and it operates normally. Set on auto, I lose packets. Set at 1000 Mbps - will not connect. 10 & 100 work on my 8 Mpbs internet connection.

So reducing the speed or playing with the modem settings and or trying to playing with flow control are possible stabs in the dark. Sorry I'm not able to help you with a solution.
