This is the route I'm wanting to go (in addition to my mirrored file server), though I'm paranoid enough to cough up the cash for two 1tb drives of different makes, and keep the same data on each.Yes, I back up my major files once a month, Pictures, music, and all that are backed up, as well as taxes, work information, and more on a 1 TB drive that is in an external enclosure, and I keep that locked in my fire resistant safe.
It's the most secure, and provided that you don't mind the initial fiscal output, there's no upkeep costs.
