I have a main machine running an Ivy Bridge set up and have 8GB on board set at 2400MHz speed and it's timings are
11 13 13 30 on I think it is 1.65v

Now I would like to ramp it up to 16GB and have found some DDR3 2400MHz on EBay (new) but it's timings are 10 12 12 24 also a 1.65v set.

What I cannot find is if I go ahead and install the new RAM sticks to the machine in the other two slots are the two different timings going to conflict so much that the machine is not going to perform properly. Again I am asking because I just cannot find a straight answer.

So at present you have 2x4gb RAM utilizing 2 slots, to give the 8gb, is this correct. Perhaps you could buy 2x8gb matching pair from Ebay & just use 2 slots. This is what I have on my Ivy Bridge system.

Humm well I was rather hoping to be able to use all four slots but I suppose it would not make that much difference eh? I was just trying to speed the old thing up because the RAM beep is taking at least ten secs to go off and I don't remember it being that long before.

I am actually trying Linux on the machine and it just makes the boot time so long.

On a dual channel, what is very important is to have a mach pair on those sticks that are making the dual channel.
So is important to have sticks 1&2 matching and 3&4 matching.
Be careful as normally: slot 1=fist, 2=third, 3=second, 4=4th.

Something else to remember is that you have to set the RAM timings to the slowest RAM sticks. That means that you would have to leave the RAM timings as they are, and plug the new sticks into the mainboard in the manner that Megahertz07 has indicated. The new RAM will run at the old timings without causing a problem, but if you use the new faster timings on the new RAM, the system may not work or boot because your old RAM cannot run at those timings.

Short answer: Use 11-13-13-30 and all will be well.

Make sense? :)

I don't think there will be any problem adding more RAM (with latency a little slower).

Ok thanks you fellows the RAM is exactly the same speed 2400MHz it was just the timings were one digit out so I am assuming now that if the 10 12 12 30 sticks are placed in slots 1&3 then the sticks which are
11 13 13 31 would fit into slots 2&4 If so then I might just get the other RAM.

I do have some 1600MHz matched pairs too with a similar thing going with the timings so I could even try them to see if I can speed up the machine a bit.

Just as a by the by just lately the RAM beep has been taking a long time to sound after power up so can the machine using four slots going to help out with that time lag??

John, I don't think you need more than 8G and will never use the added RAM.
I have (4+4)G and never seen more than 5 in use.
Did you do a RAM test? Is your BIOS up to date?
I have Open Hardware Monitor, a small program that shows the temperatures on the task bar and a small window on the desktop that you can configure to show used memory.
