I am aware that users should only have a single anti virus app running on their system.

Every month when I run the automatic updates, the Windows Defender application is installed automatically - it is turned off as McAfee AntiVirus Plus is installed on my laptop and it performs the same tasks as those in Windows Defender.

My question is this - if McAfee does the same thing, why should I have Windows Defender on may laptop???

Pierre,
McAfee doesn't have a stellar record in the matter of not interfering with Win 7 systems.

My recommendation: 100% remove McAfee, install Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) link in my sig.

MSE is the one and the only av i use, i install, recommend.

I do not use Anti-spyware or anti-anything. I use MSE and only MSE.

A little more to the OP's question, no, you don't need Windows Defender when running a 3rd party (McAfee) antivirus. You can disable WD by going to its settings > Admin > uncheck use this program. Not only "can" you do this, but you should.
