Mcafee security center - incompatible?

I just installed Windows 7 over my VISTA OS on my new Toshiba Notebook. Since I have only 3 GB of RAM I installed the 32 Bit Version of W7...

VERY DISAPPOINTED immediately as I encountered 2 issues

1. McAfee Security Center is alerting me that software is Not Compatible....

2. Internet Explorer barely runs... and when I exit IE, there is no less than 30 second delay before the window closes... even if I have just opened IE and immediately close (meaning nothing has cached to be cleared)..

Never install a beta OS on a working machine...always somewhere where it doesn't matter if it screws up.

McAfee is not compatible with Windows 7 beta. Norton 350 2009 beta 3 is....sort of, but not recommended. Check the forum Search for antivirus and firewall. I use Avast A/V and good old Windows Firewall because it is configurable for both outgoing and incoming traffic now.

You installed this as an upgrade? Far better to do a clean installation.

Since I have a notebook which came without CDs.. the only backup I have of my system was done the day I bought it.. before installing (probably 10 hours) all my software... ARGH.....

I hate to say, you are going to have to format and reinstall your system from scratch. Don't forget to apply all updates and if you so decide in the future that you want to test a beta OS, partition your drive so you have a nice clean slate to start with.

Don't think I will testing any OS betas in the near future... but likely to be stuck with this one for a few weeks as I don't have the time to spare with rebuild...

Assuming I use the backup disks I have... will they be smart enough to reformat????

I've never used such disks in the past..

I would imagine so, have never used that type of setup before. Anywhere you can ask, where you got them for instance?

What a bummer, when things go real bad for me it always seems to be on a sunday evening too. Breaking is fun sometimes but it ticks me off on sunday nights, wishing it happened on Friday or Saturday so I had a good solid day to repair before the work week.
Hope you had a backup of all your important docs.

I really wouldn't say that McAfee is STRICTLY incompitable. It won't install yes, but if you did manage to do it anyway, it works. Therefore, compatible.

I'm currently using McAfee, and it works as it should as usual.

Windows Action Center detecting McAfee products:

There are a bit of issues with it though. Firstly, Microsoft applications like Windows Update, Windows Defender, and Windows Live Net Installer can't access the net unless you disable McAfee's firewall (they are already added to the trusted list, yet temporarily disabling them seemed to be the only workaround.

Secondly, doing stuff too fast with McAfee security center crashes mcshell.exe sometimes. But it's just the interface, you can always reopen it anyway. No problem with other Mcafee services/processes.

Lastly, if you are going to have problems with McAfee, you can't diagnose it since mvtapp (the official McAfee application that checks issues with your McAfee products) is "not compatible with this operating system".

*Notes: This system was upgraded from Windows Vista Ultimate. Hence, why McAfee managed to 'stick up to' Windows 7.

Maybe McAfee "stayed on" when you upgraded, but the installer flatly refuses to recognise the operating system when starting a fresh installation.

uninstalled McAfee on my system and Internet Explorer is working MUCH better now... exiting IE is fast.. not a 30 second ordeal.

So how to I protect this pc AGAINst virus now?>

So Basically, I'm one of the very few ,if not the only one, that can run W7 with McAfee?? What luck..

You're in for a few nasty surprises from my own research. I think you'll find the system will seize up frequently, updates may not work etc.
As a McAfee Moderator I help out extensively at their forums and I can tell you that I tried every which way to get it to work in W7. Getting it to install in the first place was like pulling teeth.
I got it installed and then found out that I had no working Task Manager, couldn't access the Control Panel, Firewall and various other entities. Had to restore to an earlier time. Now I have settled with Avast A/V and Windows Firewall.
Even if it works I wouldn't want to have it on a beta system as it is liable to break any time, or break something else. Neither would I try Norton.

Well, from that last screenshot you can see me on control panel. Fact is, our differences is that you did a clean install while I didn't. I guess installing in on windows 7 breaks it, and installing it on Vista then upgrade to 7 makes it work.

About Norton, yeah it really sucks based on my experience years ago.

Well I wish you luck, hope it functions OK. You are the only one so far that I know of eith it working on Windows 7.

If it malfunctions there wont be any support available as the OS isn't officially supported.
