Mechanical Keyboards

How many of you own one? Also what are your thoughts on them? Thinking about getting one here soon.

Mechanical keyboards have actual keyswitches in them and they are clicky and clacky. While they make a fair amount of noise, the tactile feedback can make typing far more enjoyable for people. I've used them at home and like them a lot. I wouldn't be able to use one at work due to noise.

Most modern keyboards are rubber dome membrane keyboards are are more quiet...but they don't usually last as long and for many can be a real pain to type on.

Is there any particular model that you are thinking of buying? DAS and Deck make very nice keyboards....(but they cost $100-$175) The least expensive model out there is the ABS M1...which is about $50 from Newegg.

Perhaps it would have been better if you had addressed your post to the OP, rather than myself. However, this thread has been a heads up for me, and I may get one. Can't remember which it was, but an ad for one of these said that it was designed more compact than a standard keyboard, which may be good for a gamer, but I have had keyboards that were just slightly more compact than I was accustomed to and they threw me for a loop. This is something that I shall have to study more in depth before making a decision.

Now im trying to decide to wait till this keyboard gives out, or just replace it. I haven't heard of them either until yesterday i stumbled across a thread on another forum and it has peaked my interest pretty hard.

If you want quiet i hear the browns are pretty quiet and still perform pretty well, i for one like the noise, and the little research i did the cherry blues seem to be the best for both gaming and typing. I just wanted to see peoples opinions on them and how they are enjoying them at everyday use. I love my saitek its nice looking and it responds pretty well but im so tempted to try something new.

I have the Unicomp copy of the old IBM Model M. I've had it about six months and I like it. It's great for typing. On the other hand, most don't have any multimedia keys.

Mechanical keyboards make great gaming keyboards.

As a general rule, I've grown to loathe these cheap and soft membrane keyboards.

It depends on your needs and usage. Keep a 'soft/easy typer' for standard tasks and use a mechanical one for gaming.

I would love to try one out before i actually buy it. That's why i don't want to dip my nose straight into this Filco just in case i don't like it but that's how it seems considering they are not to popular.

The old keyboards were good but the "cherry switches" do go back and need to be replaced. Fortunately the old keyboards that had the cherry switches could be worked on and a bad key replaced. I've worked on IBM mainframe keyboards and on some old GTE (Ultronics Systems) keyboards that had replaceable keys. But, these model keyboards were custom/proprietary interfaces and not compatible with PC I/O device interfaces.

I know this thread was a bit old, but I picked up a ABS M1 keyboard tonight after debating this for a while. It will take a little getting used to, but thus far I am pretty happy with it. It's no frills and I like that. And it's nice and heavy, so it doesn't slide around.

The cord could be a bit longer...that would be my only real complaint.
