media centre extenders?

I'm looking for an MC extender which will play avi's, I was looking at thelinksys dma2200 but have since learnt it will not play avi's. Preferably I would like one with a dvd player built in, does any one have any suggestions?

Its just a registry key that you need to edit..Hang around and i'll be uploading in detail..

Hey man I came threw..

Look at classes_root and for each video type the root of each node is empty. Something you've installed had taken out the Content Type and PerceivedType settings.

So to fix use, and save the below as "fix_movie_associations.reg" and run it from the desktop. Now all the media should be playing in WMC and WMP

Save the below into a *.reg file and run it.

Dxxs, it's not even necessary to use the registry editor; just copy/paste everything below into Notepad, save it as fix_movie_associations.reg , double-click the saved file and confirm.

Thats what im currently running in the living room, just want something for the bedroom, do you think another xbox would be a better way to go that the linksys?

Bump. I extend with an old 360 elite and it's great, mkv, avi pretty much everything I've tried to play has worked. I'm definitely looking at getting a new 360 slim for the lounge. Don't think there is anything better out there.

Forgive my noobishness but does this allow other file types to be played in the "movies" section so i could use YAMMM and get cover art? I should add I do a streaming only set up to 360's.

I have a dma2200 the one with the player (it lags). I've just converted my movies and video clips until now thanks for the above info I'll give it a shot. I have since set up a PC just dedicated to media hooked to my tv for netflix, and sharing vid, music, and pic on my home network to my living room tv.

Disappointed to find that the dma200 does not support Netflix to the best of my knowledge. The very reason I converted to the media center PC. My research shows that the X-Box 360 is best way to go for things like streaming media and Netfilx etc.. Just something for thought depending on what you are looking for.
