My Dell desktop worked fine 2 weeks ago before I moved to a new house. We now have Mediacom's Extream package for our able and internet. After connecting my Dell Optiplex 760 with Windows 7 64 bit to it, I now have multiple problems. Neither Google Chrome or Internet Explorer will open pages, although I can open bookmarks with no problem. Windows Update gets hung up every time I try to update. Has anyone else had this problem? I am afraid to try and delete Google Chrome and reinstall it because I won't be able to get online to do it. Is there a simple way to find out where my problem lies? Could it just be a bad windows update that is hanging up everything else? Any help would be appreciated. My PC info is below.

If bookmarks will open, that suggests internet is working. What antivirus are you using, could be it is detecting something it does not like and preventing your from accessing the web. Temporarily disable the antivirus program and see if that allows you access. I've had problems with both McAfee and Norton with web access at client's PC's.

I figured it out. It was my Zone Alarm firewall. Why would a firewall that's been working fine for 6 months all of a sudden freak out and lock up everything? As soon as I removed it everything was copacetic. I tried just disabling it but that did not make a difference. I switched to Comodo firewall and everything is fine. Thanks for the input anyway guys!

Their is a good possibility because you have IObit Advanced System Care installed also.
ASC does all kinds of bad things. Sometime the problems ASC causes can only be fixed by doing a Clean Install.

Your question from post #1.

Why would a firewall that's been working fine for 6 months all of a sudden freak out and lock up everything?

Why do you need a separate firewall? The built in is all I've used for years.

I've read many times that the windows firewall is very easy to penetrate by hackers so I thought it was smart to use one more powerful.
